Easter Egg Scramble, Holy Week Prayers, Easter Choir and Orchestra

Dear Church Family,

We’re keeping this up here: We wanted to collect 900 toothbrushes for Crisis Care Kits and we’ve already collected over 1000! So we’re now collecting 100 tubes of toothpaste. Read more below. Bring them in on Sunday March 24!

Now, for today’s Lenten Devotional from Pastor Brad Shaffer. (If you haven’t signed up for daily devotional emails, sign up here.)

Philippians 2:1-11

Proverbs  23:7 relates: as a man thinks in his heart so he becomes. King Solomon rightly emphasized the impact of attitude on influencing outcomes. His wisdom underscores that attitude is vital in every area of life, including academic or vocational pursuits, outlook on life, daily challenges, and especially relationships.

If healthy relationships are our desire, then nothing is more harmful than an attitude of selfishness. In chapter 2 of his letter, Paul makes a passionate plea to the Philippian congregation, urging them to “make me truly happy by agreeing wholeheartedly with each other…don’t be selfish…don’t look out for your own interests only.”

Healthy relationships begin with the supreme example of Jesus. Paul admonishes: “you must have the same attitude that Christ Jesus had.” Jesus is God. But though He has “divine privileges,” He did not insist on His rights, He laid down His rights in obedience to the Father and for the redemption of others. Jesus’ attitude is counter-cultural to a society that suggests the key to happiness and self-fulfillment is through self-absorption and self-indulgence. Jesus’ example proved the opposite. He taught and demonstrated it is better to give than receive.

As we follow Jesus’ example of selfless service to God and others we discover the happiness found in giving. We don’t possess the attitude of Christ perfectly. But Paul reminded the Philippians in vs. 13 that “God is working in you, giving you the desire and the power to do what pleases him.” Jesus’ humiliation led to His exaltation. Jesus is Lord of all! As daily we live in surrender to His Lordship, we receive His power to display the attitude of Christ. As Proverbs 23:7 suggests, with His Spirit and His attitude in our hearts, we are becoming more and more like Christ.

How might Jesus’ example of sacrificial love motivate you to have the attitude of Christ?

Pastor Brad Shaffer

JTAG Choir and Orchestra - It's that time again. It's time to sign up for the JTAG Choir and Orchestra. We are singing and playing together on Easter Sunday (3/31). If you even remotely like to sing or if you play an instrument, go to stillnaz.com/choir to sign up. You will also find a preview of the music we are singing and playing, along with the music to download. There is printed music available as of March 3rd. See Pastor John to get your book.

Pray with us

You can find a guide to prayer and submit a prayer request at www.stillnaz.com/pray. This week, let us pray for…

Our citizens who live in York County, mayors, school boards. The print and broadcast media. The churches of York: members and clergy. All who live in poverty. All who suffer from mental illness.

Pray for Jonathan Phillips our missionary to Romania:

Jonathan just began a Sabbatical. He asks: “Please pray that this will be a time of rest and restoration, focusing on my relationship with God, so that I will feel refreshed and ready to resume activities when I return to Romania at the end of June. (That sentence has way too many words that begin with the letters “re”!) Pray for ministries and administrative tasks in Romania, that they will continue without any problems during my absence.”

Prayerfully Give: Most sabbatical-related expenses are covered by a generous donation received by Global Missions designated for missionary sabbaticals. However, Jonathan is still responsible for covering some of the expenses. Of course, this is in addition to raising his normal expenses as a sponsored missionary. Since he is taking a sabbatical in place of home assignment this year, he will not be in the US to raise funds until 2025. If you wish to make a donation to his deputation account give to stillnaz.com/give and select Jonathan Phillips.

Joy Boxes on Sundays!

On Sundays at the Stillmeadow Lane Campus, we will be receiving our physical offerings through our Joy Boxes at the two entrances to our Family Life Center. You may give when you enter for worship or when you exit to serve the world. This will replace the receiving of offerings by passing the baskets in the middle of our worship services. And it will be similar to the way offerings were received in Jesus’ day! Read Luke 21:1-4 for an example of giving. May we give with the generous and sacrificial spirit of the poor widow that Jesus lifted up in that passage.

Help Us Collect 100 Tubes of Toothpaste

Hooray! We met our goal of 900 toothbrushes for the district assembly Crisis Care Kit assembly party, so we signed up to collect 100 individual 4.0-6.4 oz tubes of toothpaste! Bring those in by March 24 (to the compassion room). If you already purchased toothbrushes, just bring those in as well!

And if you want to make a Crisis Care Kit yourself, here are the instructions.

Cool story: We wanted to collect 900 toothbrushes for Crisis Care Kits and we’ve already collected over 1000! So we’re now collecting 100 tubes of toothpaste. Read more below.

Now, for today’s Lenten Devotional from Ben Zeigler. (If you haven’t signed up for daily devotional emails, sign up here.)

Hebrews 4:1-13

This passage today reminds me of when I taught my kids to learn how to drive. At first they had to start studying for the written portion of the test and pass that part. Once they passed the written test and proved they had the knowledge, they were allowed to drive a car with an adult by their side. To prepare for getting your actual license, you had to drive and put what you learned to use. There was a lot of work leading up to the final driving test, but once they passed the test they were able to relax and enjoy the freedom of driving. Can you imagine our highways if we only had the written test and never took the time to learn to put it to practice?

In our passage today, we learn that our weekly Sabbath is a taste of what our eternal Sabbath will be like. We see the importance of working hard and living our lives to the fullest for Him and in turn receiving eternal rest with Jesus. In our Christian walk we cannot just “pass the written test” of reading the Bible and praying. We have to learn how to put this knowledge and relationship to use by living it out in our lives and allowing others to come to know Jesus in their own lives. When we live our faith out to our fullest, we ultimately achieve eternal rest. As experienced drivers, driving becomes natural and part of who they are. As we live our lives with Jesus, growing closer to Him and sharing His love with others, this lifestyle becomes natural and part of who we are.

  • Are you just “passing the written test” by having the knowledge of living a life with Jesus or are you all in and living that knowledge out?

Ben Zeigler

Have you given your life to Jesus? The next step is to be baptized!

Baptism is the ancient symbol of the church to recognize that a person has been cleansed of their sins, has died to their old way of life and has been raised to Jesus’ way of life. For the baptized it is an opportunity to say “I am all in” to the way of Jesus.

We want to celebrate your new life in Christ with baptism on Easter Sunday. If you have questions, you can ask pastorjosh@stillnaz.com. And you can sign up at www.stillnaz.com/baptism. Our baptism class is this Sunday (March 17).

Reflecting on Genesis 9:8-17

My daughter had a beautiful snow globe I had bought her for her birthday that played “Somewhere Over the Rainbow.” It was special to both of us. We even have a picture of me giving it to her when she turned 6 years old. One day her and her brother were having fun in her room and with a swipe of an arm, the snow globe was knocked down, shattered on the floor. Her tears were the kind of tears that make a mother’s whole body hurt. I cried alongside her as we picked up each piece of the glass. After we cleaned up the glass and soaked up the water, we looked at the snow globe as a new creation. It was now a unicorn that we could touch, not surrounded by water and glass but that still played “Somewhere Over the Rainbow.”

In Genesis, God grieves over the pain in the world. He feels the grief of a parent over the brokenness of the world. And then the snow globe shatters and God sends the flood. However, He doesn’t wipe away all of creation but He wipes creation clean. He re-creates it. It is an act of God seeking us and wanting us to come back to the perfection He created for us.

Then He doesn’t have to play “Somewhere Over the Rainbow” but instead hangs a rainbow in the sky to promise us that He seeks to re-create us and draw us into harmony. God still seeks for you to know you are a new creation that He has wiped clean. He calls us to live into this freedom, to pick up the broken pieces, and to see ourselves as His new creation and sing “Somewhere Over the Rainbow.”

  • Do you see yourself as a new creation in Jesus?

Thank you notes to the church…

Thank you for your faithful support and prayers of God’s work in and through me in Papua, New Guinea. I was always thankful for the monthly prayer requests knowing folks were praying for me. As my missionary career is ending, I just wanted to take the time to say thank you. I trust another missionary will be just as blessed by your prayers as I was. May God continue to watch over you. We are grateful for the love prayers and support from our church family as we journeyed through my mother’s illness and eventual home going. The Lord has been so faithful and many of you have been instruments of that faithfulness. Dear Church Family,

If you missed last night’s Mid-Week Lenten Service presented by the BMA at Stillmeadow, you can tune in here.

If you haven’t signed up for daily devotional emails, sign up here. Below is today’s reflection from Brian Meyers on 1 Peter 2:4-10.

In 1 Peter 2:4-10, we are reminded that we are living stones, chosen and precious in the eyes of the Lord. These verses speak of Christ as the cornerstone, the foundation upon which our faith is built. He was first rejected by his people, then became the cornerstone for all peoples and has given us mercy.

Our worth, that is tied to His ultimate sacrifice, becomes a profound reflection of a love so deep that he was willing to die for us so that we may live. As we think about the significance of being a part of God’s spiritual house, let us recognize the immense value He sees in each of us, a value worth dying for. May this truth inspire gratitude and a desire to live lives worthy of his sacrifice made on our behalf.

How can you show the goodness of God to others today?

And it will be similar to the way offerings were received in Jesus’ day! Read Luke 21:1-4 for an example of giving. May we give with the generous and sacrificial spirit of the poor widow that Jesus lifted up in that passage.

Erin Meier

We are grateful for the love prayers and support from our church family as we journeyed through my mother’s illness and eventual home going. The Lord has been so faithful and many of you have been instruments of that faithfulness. We also cherished the flowers as they have brought cheer to our days, We are blessed to call Stillmeadow our home. With grateful hearts, Jennifer Stough & Family

Join us tomorrow at the mid-week Lenten Service

Dear Friends,

Tomorrow night (2/28) at 7PM, we will host a Mid-Week Lenten Service in partnership with the Black Ministers Association at our Stillmeadow Lane Campus. This is a unique opportunity for us to “embrace unity” with our brothers and sisters in other churches in our area.

Fittingly, the theme for the Lenten Series is “Lord Make Us One.” Can you help in two ways?

  1. Pray for acts of unity between the leaders and members of the churches.

  2. Be intentional about meeting someone new at the service.

Grace and Peace,

Pastor Josh

Men’s Retreat, Coats for Immigrants, Next EHS Class

Dear Church Family,

We began our Lenten Journey yesterday! If you haven’t signed up for daily devotional emails, sign up here. Below is today’s reflection from Nedra Lahr on Psalm 22:23-31.

"For he has not despised or disdained the suffering of the afflicted one, he has not hidden his face from him but has listened to his cry for help." (24)

This is a psalm of praise of God's faithfulness to all generations. Do you tend to see life from an "eternal perspective?" I am finding that in the pain of life, my focus must be on the much larger picture, so to speak. In recent years, through waves of pain and grief, I have come to understand that our God is here now- he listens to our cries for help, and he comes as our Comforter. He understands the depths of our pain and suffering, which we focus on during this season of Lent. Yet, he is faithful in all things, and he is our savior for all eternity.

Total faithfulness not just in the here-and-now but for all eternity! He has saved us, he is saving us now, and he will continue to save us for all eternity! But that does not mean he saves us from suffering in the midst of a broken world. It means he has promised to be with us through it- oh, how I love that!

When I am hurting, I remind myself of a God who does not turn from our suffering, a God who listens to our cry for help. I know he comforts, he sustains, he helps in the moment and for all the future moments, and I find peace. Even if I do not feel his presence, I know the peace of trusting his faithfulness- the essence of faith is not a feeling but a belief, a trusting that God is who he says he is and will do what he says he will do. Even when we do not feel it, we know it. Peace in his faithfulness. And I love to share this truth with others! When we have a gift, it is to be shared! The faithfulness of God through and to all generations must be shared! Tell of his wondrous deeds of faithfulness in your life, but also in his plan to redeem the world!

With whom can you share God's faithfulness during this Lenten season?

"They will proclaim his righteousness to a people yet unborn--for he has done it."

~~Nedra Lahr~~

IF (Women’s Conference), Intro to Stillnaz, Ripple Effect

Dear Church Family,

We began our Lenten Journey yesterday! If you haven’t signed up for daily devotional emails, sign up here. Below is today’s reflection from Gabe Hurlbert on 1 John 1:3-10.

In this passage, not only is the redemptive power of Christ proclaimed, but the necessity of fellowship, maybe even the commandment of fellowship, is emphasized. After “the blood of Jesus, his Son, purifies us from all sin” (v 7b); we are called to live not only in close relationship with Jesus but also with his body, the Church. God is actively redeeming us and is actively pursuing a relationship with us; if you think you can do this walk on your own, you are wrong.

For a long time in my life, I focused solely on my personal relationship with Jesus. Having a personal relationship is so good and is so necessary, but I was missing out on so much more that God had to offer. When I surrounded myself with a community of faithful friends and had real and vulnerable conversations about my sin, God’s redemptive power was made so much more evident. I once had a pastor tell me, “Sometimes when it’s hard for us to hold onto the hands of Jesus, we have to reach out and hold the hands of those who are holding onto Jesus.”

If we try and walk this path alone, “If we claim to have fellowship with him and yet walk in the darkness, we lie and do not live out the truth.” (v 6). During this season of Lent, I encourage you to step out of the darkness; stop trying to do this on your own. Surround yourself with a community of uplifting believers and watch as God works in ways that you’ve never imagined.

~~Gabe Hurlbert~~

Lent Begins, IF (Women’s Conference), New Groups

Dear Church Family,

A prayer for you…

And this is my prayer: that your love may abound more and more in knowledge and depth of insight, so that you may be able to discern what is best and may be pure and blameless for the day of Christ, filled with the fruit of righteousness that comes through Jesus Christ — to the glory and praise of God. (Philippians 1:9-11)

Think about what Paul prayed there for the Philippian church. Imagine a church whose love abounds in knowledge and deep insight. Imagine a church being purified and living holy lives. Imagine a church “filled with the fruit of righteousness.” This is my prayer for us.

Lent Begins next Wednesday

Lent is a season to grow in love, to deepen our insight into the love God has for us. It begins on Ash Wednesday (February 14) and runs through Easter. It is a time to consider our own mortality and need for salvation. It is a time to consider what we need to give up in order to receive His gifts. What a wonder that it begins on a day when love is remembered. His is the greatest love ever!

We invite you to join us on the Lenten Journey in the following ways.

Attend the BMA Ash Wednesday Service at 7PM at Fairview Full Gospel Missionary Baptist Church, 465 S Pine St, York, PA.

Tools for Prayer, Chili Cookoff, Night 2Gether

Happy New Year Church Family,

Keep asking…

In Luke 11 and Matthew 7, when Jesus says, “Ask and it will be given to you; seek and you will find; knock and the door will be opened to you” he’s encouraging his disciples to be persistent. It’s like he’s saying, “Ask again and again; seek and keep on seeking; knock until the door opens.” Remember, all Jesus’ advice on prayer is essentially advice on relationship with God. So, he’s saying, “Stick with God and you’ll find what you’re looking for.”

Ways to be persistent in asking, seeking, knocking…

Pastor Rachel shared some great ideas on how to grow in your prayer relationship with God in her message on Sunday (January 21). Here are some more practical ways.

  1. Keep a Prayer List. Write down your prayer requests and revisit them daily. You can do this in the notes section of your phone or use the Echo Prayer App to remind you.

  2. Write down the names of your neighbors to pray for them. I have found the Bless Every Home website to be helpful, because they send me daily reminders with names of my neighbors and ways to pray.

  3. Pray for York. We have a prayer guide at www.stillnaz.com/pray, where you can also submit any prayer requests that you have so we can pray with you.

  4. Pray around the globe. You can get weekly emails for updates and ways to pray for our Nazarene brothers and sisters by subscribing to the Nazarene Missions Prayer Mobilization Line. You can also get monthly updates with Stillmeadow’s Harvest Prayer or pray with the Harvest Prayer team on the fourth Sunday of every month during the 10:30 service.

Happy New Year Church Family,

The Lord is near to all who call on him…

This year I am reading through the Bible with one of my daughters. As I read Psalm 145, my heart was drawn to these three verses.

8 The Lord is gracious and compassionate,

slow to anger and rich in love.

9 The Lord is good to all;

he has compassion on all he has made.

18 The Lord is near to all who call on him,

to all who call on him in truth.

And then in my January “Lead with Prayer” Devotional on the Echo Prayer App, these three verses were the ones we were invited to reflect on. God was gifting me with a “double showing.” I need that reminder of his grace and compassion and goodness. And during this season, it is vital for me to remember that God is close to anyone who will call on him in truth.

Let God hear the voice of your heart today. When you call there is no “busy” signal. You won’t have to leave a voicemail. He is the God who hears. And as my devotional said: “Sometimes God answers prayer with miracles. But many times He answers prayer with the comfort found in His presence.”

Happy New Year Church Family,

Don’t stop praying

God is so cool. I love it when He uses multiple avenues to get my attention. For example, we’re in a series on prayer and Pastor Steve and Jade just preached about being persistent in prayer. And just two days before, Matthew West dropped a new song called, “Don’t Stop Praying.” Take a moment to listen and take a lifetime to learn the lesson.

https://youtu.be/bpbZqMJ-B44?si=jTQKg_GrJ_MYWykQ

I love this part of the song…

Don’t stop praying for the prodigal

Don’t stop praying for the miracle

Hallelujah, hallelujah and amen

Don’t stop praying that addictions end

Don’t stop praying for deliverance

Hallelujah, hallelujah and amen

Oh, don’t stop praying for the sickness healed

Don’t stop praying for His power revealed

Hallelujah, hallelujah and amen

No, don’t stop praying for the kingdom come

Don’t stop praying that his will be done

Hallelujah, hallelujah and amen

New Series, Pray for the EJAM Team & More

Happy New Year Church Family,

Meet Me In the Garden

In our first sermon series of 2024, we begin in the Garden with Jesus, where he poured out his heart and aligned His life with His Father in prayer. Commentators say that in the Garden of Eden, Adam said, “not your will but mine” but in the Garden of Gethsemane, Jesus said, “not my will but thine.”

In the milestone and mundane moments that you face this year, will you join Jesus in his prayer? Will you surrender your will to the will of the Father? If the Father is all loving and all good, don’t you want to?

  • As you move into a new neighborhood, school or job, pray, “not my will, but thine.”

  • As you bring a new child (biological or foster) into your home, pray, “not my will, but thine.”

  • As you join a small group or ministry, pray, “not my will, but thine.”

  • As you come to the end of an era, retirement or saying goodbye to a family member, pray, “not my will, but thine.”

Christmas Eve, Sabbath Sunday, Congrats to Pastor Jade & more!

Dear Church Family,

Here is today’s Advent Devotional written by Pat Eyler:

JOY

2    S A M U E L    6 :  1  - 1  1

When I was a young girl, I remember that many times as I would leave our home, my mother would say," Remember, you carry your dad's name." I knew what that meant and how important it was to honor my dad's name.

The Israelites were God's chosen people and they carried God's name. They also carried his presence in the Ark of the Covenant. He had given them specific instructions on how the ark was to be moved from place to place (Numbers 4:15, Numbers 7:9, Exodus 25:10-15). No matter how innocently it was done, touching the ark was in direct violation of God's law and was to result in death. This was a means of preserving the sense of God's holiness.

The Ark had been taken away from Israel and now David wanted to bring it back. It seemed the right thing to do, but David did things his own way rather than God's way. He might have been caught up in the excitement of planning to bring the ark back to Israel. Or maybe he just forgot what God had told Moses?

As the ark was being transported, the oxen pulling the cart stumbled, and a man named Uzzah took hold of the Ark. God struck Uzzah down, and he died. This was tragic, and David feared the Lord. That ended his plans for the Ark and his joyous rejoicing that day.

We may question how could such a thing happen. Uzzah was from a Levite family and should have known God's instructions. One thing we learned from this passage is God is holy, and it is important to honor his name and obey him.

Today, having Jesus in your heart is God's presence in your life. Do you know you have God's presence in your life? (1 John  5:13).

Christmas Eve Services, Sabbath Sunday and More!

Dear Church Family,

Here is today’s Advent Devotional written by Pastor Kathy Foltz:

PEACE

H A B A K K U K   2 :  1  -   5

In this passage, the prophet Habakkuk has been crying out for judgment against  his people because of their sins. God is using a sinful nation to judge a sinful nation. No nation is innocent in this matter. God tells the prophet that He is going to make things right in his  timing.

For us this is a lesson of living by faith. If God has not solved a problem then it is because it is not God’s time yet. Moreover, by faith we have to trust that He  has good reasons for delay. However, there is one thing that is true; He will cling to us and embrace us through any confusion in this world as we wait.

It at times seems impossible that we will ever see peace in our hostile world  today, but if we wait patiently in faith all things will be made new and perfect.  At this time of the year, we should remind ourselves why Jesus came down to earth as God with skin on. Jesus was the promise that by faith all things will be made right. There will be no complete peace until Jesus comes back to earth. He is the promise of true peace. The Prince of Peace!

“For the revelation awaits an appointed time It speaks of the end and will not prove false Though it linger, wait for it; It will certainly come and will not  delay.” —Habakkuk 2:3

Church Board Elections, Singing and More!

Dear Church Family,

Here is the Advent Devotional for today by Chastity Frederick.

HOPE

H O S E A    6 :  1  - 6

The writings of the prophets are often a bit abrupt, hurling words of God’s coming judgment and calling for repentance. Hosea was such a prophet, calling for Israel’s repentance. We know that he married Gomer, an adulterous wife. And God even instructed Hosea to reconcile with her “though she is loved by another.” In the Scripture, we see this illustration being skillfully woven beside that of God’s love towards the Israelites.

As we enter today’s reading, we are drawn in - “Come. Let us return to the Lord,” Israel laments about their judgments, but suggests that God will heal, bandage, bless, and make new.

But there’s a plot twist, the Israelites were seeking a “quick fix” (I guess no one else has ever prayed one of those prayers?) Israel’s love was “like the early dew that disappears.” The Israelites were not interested in relationship with God, they were interested in relief from His judgment.

Hosea’s prophetic words in verse 6 pierce my soul, “I want mercy and not   sacrifice. I want you to recognize me as God instead of bringing me burnt offerings.” In Hebrew, mercy is translated as hesed - right living - love,  compassion, forgiveness. God’s “hesed” could not let Israel go and it won’t let you go either.

We can hold hope – confident expectation - that God is faithful. Just as He pursued the Israelites’ hearts and yours, He is pursuing the hearts of those around you.

Today, am I seeking a relationship with God or relief from God?

So thankful that Advent Experience is coming (and more)

Happy November Church Family!

Oh, what joy it is to ride and sing a saving song tonight. Heaven came down and glory filled the earth. That’s the theme of our advent series and that’s the song and story of the incarnation! God became like us so that we could become like Him. Yet, we live in the glorious in-between…the hope-filled and war-torn space between Jesus’ first arrival and his final arrival. One of the best ways to wait in that space is to practice gratitude, to say thanks for all the talents we have been given, for all the grace we have been shown. This week, what are you thankful for? Let me know at pastorjosh@stillnaz.com. My list is in the PS at the bottom!

The Family Advent Experience is Coming November 26

I’m thankful for what we’ll be doing this Sunday! The Advent season (Dec 3-24) is an incredible opportunity to prepare our hearts and lives for the second arrival of Jesus by remembering his first arrival! So, we have set aside the Sunday before Advent (Nov 26) as a special family advent experience to prepare our hearts and lives as a church family. This will be a worshipful and interactive all-generation service.

The Advent Devotional

And I’m thankful for the work of our people who helped write the Advent Devotional! It will be available on November 26. You can grab a hard copy and you can have it emailed to your inbox by subscribing on the button below.

“Just Mercy” has wrapped up!
I’m grateful for the way God moved in our most recent series, as Pastor Tabitha (at Stillmeadow Lane) and Pastor Isabell (at York City Campus) wrapped us up on Sunday.

I’m grateful for all the people who helped with the Thanksgiving Meal at our City Campus.

I’m grateful for all the people who have volunteered to help with Prison Ministries or Foster Care Ministries.

I’m grateful for all those who took ornaments to give to the Nursing Home Blessing!

I’m grateful for the $2605.51 given to Good News Prison Ministries and the $1511.61 given to Keystone Family Alliance.

I’m grateful for the $875 in gift cards given to Goode Elementary and $865 given to Sinking Springs and Roundtown (from our Welcome Bash!).

Sign up to serve at www.stillnaz.com/serve. Find out more about prison ministry at stillnaz.com/prisonministry. Find out more about foster care ministry at stillnaz.com/fostercare. Let the justice and mercy of Jesus roll in York County and beyond!
