Keep Watch, Ash Wednesday, IF: Gathering
Dear Church,
“What will be the sign of Jesus’ coming and of the end of the age?” That’s what the disciples wondered in today’s reading from Matthew 24. It’s what many people wonder when they ask about the “signs of the times.”
It’s interesting to note that Jesus only gives one sign, a few difficulties that will come and many warnings for believers.
The one sign is a promise: “Then will appear the sign of the Son of Man in heaven. And then all the peoples of the earth will mourn when they see the Son of Man coming on the clouds of heaven, with power and great glory. And he will send his angels with a loud trumpet call, and they will gather his elect from the four winds, from one end of the heavens to the other.” (Matthew 24:30-31) This is good news, that Jesus will come again!
Jesus also listed difficulties that the world and the church would experience in the meantime: Earthquakes, wars, famines, false messiahs “are the beginnings of birth pains” (Matt 24:4-8) but are not the sign.
Jesus warned against:
Deceptive and abusive leaders (Matt 24:5, 22-24)
An increase of wickedness (Matt 24:12)
A coldness of love (Matt 24:12)
And the destruction of the temple (which took place within the first century!)
How are we to live?
Stand firm to the end. (Matt 24:13)
Preach the gospel of the kingdom to the whole world. (Matt 24:14)
Keep watch. (Matthew 24:42)
Jesus states that we “do not know on what day your Lord will come.” (Matthew 24:42)
A Prayer from Matthew 24
Father, we thank you for sending your Son to teach us how to live ready for whatever happens and for planning his second arrival.
Jesus, we thank you for coming to save the world from ourselves and for promising to come again.
Spirit, help us stand firm in righteous love, inspire us to preach the good news in word and deed to our neighbors and the nations, guide us to keep watch against coldness of heart within ourselves no matter the circumstance.

Dear Church,
A question arises from Matthew 19 (and all of Matthew, really).
Am I living for the kingdom of God in everything or am I living for my own wants?
In Matthew 19, we hear Jesus' thoughts on marriage, singleness and wealth. His teaching is so challenging that it actually leaves his disciples shocked. But it is an invitation to trust that “With man this is impossible, but with God all things are possible” (Matthew 19:26).
In regards to marriage and singleness, Jesus invites us to:
Receive, celebrate and live out marriage as a sacred gift of God.
Consider deeply the weight of the marriage covenant before entering or exiting it.
Understand the significance of singleness as a gift from God.

In regards to wealth, Jesus invites us to:
Use all of our possessions for the sake of the kingdom.
Give up anything that stands in the way of following Christ as king.
Disciples of Jesus are people who allow Jesus to lead them in every area of their lives, even when it means difficult adjustments need to be made. And as we live under the leadership/kingship of Jesus, we “have treasure in heaven” (19:21) and “inherit eternal life” (19:29).
Prayer
Father, we thank you for the beautiful union you gave humanity at the beginning when you ‘made them male and female.’ And thank you for the gift of earthly possessions to meet our own needs and that we can use to help others in their needs.
Jesus, we thank you for the life-bringing instruction to live out marriage and singleness for the sake of the kingdom. We thank you for the direction to not be possessed by our possessions, but to live freely by giving freely.
Spirit, we admit that we need your help to live out our marriage or singleness for the sake of the kingdom. Fill us with your love and power within our relationships, and fill us with compassion and generosity with our possessions.

Youth Corn Hole Tournament Fundraiser This Saturday 2/4
The Teens are hosting a corn hole tournament Saturday, February 4, in the Family Life Center. The proceeds will support the students and adults going to Nazarene Youth Conference in July. Invite friends, family, neighbors, and coworkers to this event. It’s an easy way to say “come check out our church!”
Online pre-registration is highly encouraged, though we will take registration at the door. Sign up as a team or a free-agent (we will team you up with someone). There will be door prizes, trophies, and games.

True Leadership, Family Worship on 1/29, Souper Chili Bowl on 2/5
Dear Church,
Matthew 14 shows us two ways of leadership.
The first way is the way of King Herod. It is based in fear, directed by the shifting opinions of people, and results in spreading death.
The second way is the way of King Jesus. It is based in love, directed by the will of the Father, and results in spreading life.
Jesus’ way is the one that feeds the need, conquers the storm and endures forever.
What kind of leadership do you offer with your life?
Prayer
Father, release us from the opinions of others so that we may live according to your will at all times. Jesus, help us live with thoughtful compassion instead of knee-jerk reactions. Spirit, lead us in the way of Jesus so that we bring life to our families, neighbors, classmates, and coworkers.

He sees us, What Soup are you bringing?
Dear Church,
As I read Matthew 9 this morning, I was struck by the amount of times that “Jesus saw.”
There is restorative and encouraging power in “being seen” by someone. Much damage has been done because people have been “unseen” or “overlooked” or “ignored” at home, school, work or even church. But Jesus, he sees us.
Read over these verses. Imagine yourself as the person being seen. Then read over them and imagine someone in your life that is like that person being seen.
“When Jesus saw their faith, he said to the man, ‘Take heart, son; your sins are forgiven.” (9:2)
“Jesus saw a man named Matthew sitting at the tax collectors booth. ‘Follow me,’ he told him.” (9:9)
“Jesus turned and saw her. ‘Take heart, daughter, your faith has healed you.’” (9:22)
“When [Jesus] saw the crowds, he had compassion on them, because they were harassed and helpless.” (9:36)
Prayer
Jesus, you are the One who sees us. You are the One who doesn’t look away. You are the One who reaches out with forgiveness, healing, restoration and compassion. Help me see as you see. Help me see the harvest in front of me. Fill me with the Spirit of compassion and courage you showed when you walked the earth.

Dear Church,
What’s the best news you have ever received?
It’s hard for me to choose between the exciting moments of my life between good health diagnoses, college acceptance, when Aubrey said ‘yes’ to my proposal, or when I found out I was going to be a dad. But none of those compare to the good news that we have in Jesus.
The kingdom of heaven has come near.
If you are doing the reading of Matthew, you will notice that John the Baptist starts with this message in Matthew and that Jesus picks up the message in Matthew 4 after John was put in prison. It is the message that God’s loving and righteous way (the way of heaven) has come to humanity (earth). God has made Himself available to us.
We receive the kingdom through repentance.
Repentance means changing our minds about God, ourselves and the world according to what we see in the life of Jesus. And not just changing our minds, but adjusting our lives to the loving and righteous way of Jesus.
Let’s do that this year.
Prayer
God, you are eternally good and righteous and holy. We need your help to be good and righteous and holy. Jesus, you showed us the way to live, but we confess that it is hard to always live like you. Spirit, fill us to overflowing with your power to strengthen us to live according to the King of kings.

Dear Church,
Here we are…the Family of God. Looking out onto the landscape of 2023.
Perhaps you feel anxious about what lies ahead. God’s word to Joshua in his season of transition are helpful for us today.
Have I not commanded you? Be strong and courageous. Do not be afraid; do not be discouraged, for the Lord your God will be with you wherever you go.” (Joshua 1:9)
Perhaps you know the changes you need to make, but are hesitant because of the failures of the past. The writer to the Hebrews has some encouragement.
…let us throw off everything that hinders and the sin that so easily entangles. And let us run with perseverance the race marked out for us, fixing our eyes on Jesus, the pioneer and perfecter of faith. (Hebrews 12:1b-2a)

Dear Church,
It’s that beautiful breath of fresh air between Christmas and New Years Day.
Reflect on 2022
Before moving into 2023, it is good to slow down and review what has happened in your world in 2022. Jennie Allen, who leads the annual women’s IF: Gathering (coming up March 3-4, 2023), shared a helpful resource to guide reflections on the past year.
Rejoice in God’s Goodness
As you reflect, you’ll come across some great things that God did and things that show the evidence of His goodness. Take time to be grateful to God. Share that gratitude with your family and your small group and friends.
Check out Dr. Tom Noble’s thoughts on gratitude as “responding grace.”
Evaluate and Adjust
The dream guide provides some guidance on how to evaluate and adjust. What’s cool is how closely the guide lines up with the Personal Growth Plan that we encourage our people to use.
As you pray into 2023, we encourage you to ask God for guidance in these three areas:
1) your own personal growth,
2) your investment in community,
and 3) your usage of your gifts to serve others.

Celebrate Christmas with us this weekend
Dear Church,
In this final week of advent we are given an incredible story of the impact of God’s love by Christine Deibert in today’s advent devotional.
In her reflections on Mary’s words in Luke 1:46-55, she says:
“God showed His love to me by bringing me through the abuse and by preserving my life. He loved my son in also protecting him. God gave me the strength to leave this relationship, and God showed me His love which is TRUE love like no other.”
Please, be encouraged and read the whole thing.
She concludes with this question.
HOW HAS GOD BEEN FAITHFUL TO YOU AND SHOWN HIS LOVING CARE?
I encourage you to take time and give thanks for how He has been faithful. And take time to share your answer to this question with your family. Maybe even use this as a prompt at your next family meal.

We’ll have a list of names of Stillmeadow folks who are unable to get out as much so that you can write a card to bless them. And we’ll have a place for you to express your appreciation to our local police department as well.
The boxes will be out from Dec 4-25, but we'll be delivering the cards for shut-ins and police the week before Christmas, so those cards are due by Dec 18.

Are you facing grief or sorrow?
In today’s advent devotional, Nedra Lahr shares about a time when God gave her comfort and joy in the middle of a time of sorrow.
“After [my friend] Hope died, in the midst of my grief during a church service, the Lord gave me an incredible vision of Hope standing at the edge of a high cliff overlooking an emerald sea, arms outstretched, her face lifted toward the Sun that shone over a field of golden wheat. The wheat and her long, flowing white dress swayed in a gentle breeze. But the sunlight and the look on her face—it was radiant; a vision of peace and joy like I have never envisioned before or since! It was amazing how peace transitioned to joy and surprised me in the midst of my deep sorrow. And I am grateful. Comfort and joy, freedom from despair, is found when we turn our face to the Son of Light!

Spread cheer by lighting luminaries at Normandie Ridge
Next Tuesday, Dec 20, volunteers will gather to light luminaries and bring joy to the residents of Normandie Ridge. This is an all ages opportunity that begins at 4:30 and ends with cookies and hot chocolate around 5:30. If you’d like to participate, contact Julie Callender at 717-578-1310.

Are you facing a hard decision?
Be encouraged by part of Beth Stark’s story (from today’s devotional) about trusting God and receiving peace in the face of a hard decision.
“I have always loved the story of Ruth and Naomi in the Old Testament. As a child, I moved every two to three years to a new Nazarene parsonage. The phrase, “Where you go, I will go, and where you stay, I will stay,” always resounded in my nomadic heart. I just wanted to stay in one place.
“As time passed, I began my own journey as an adult with many moves…Ohio to Pennsylvania to Missouri to New Jersey to Virginia to Pennsylvania once more. As much as my heart longed to stay, the voice of God often said, “Go!”. Sometimes it was easy; other times, it required me to lay my heart open before God and accept His will once again.
“Are you making a hard decision right now? Are you stalling because you don’t know if you can trust God? Pray until peace settles over you, take action with trust, and rejoice in God’s provision!”

A Human Library is an event where people come to listen to people’s stories and have an opportunity to discuss. The purpose of this event is to connect our church family from both campuses.
Cadence Kleinfeld, a sophomore at York Academy, is hosting this as a part of a year-long personal project. Storynight will be 6 PM-8 PM on December 11th. There will be 3 sessions to hear 3 stories, followed by a time of fellowship with cookies.

Dear Church,
We’re journeying through advent with stories from our community. Read part of Lorraine Lauer’s encouragement from today’s devotional below.
Are you living in a place called hope?
Or do you prepare for the worst and HOPE for the best? Many of us want to live in HOPE, but we get caught up in living with the “glass half empty” mentality. Living with the “glass half full” mentality or living in HOPE seems “risky.” Therefore, we prepare for disappointment rather than God’s best.
In my faith walk, the Lord is teaching me to run to Him rather than anything or anyone else. Have you prayed about it as much as you worry or complain about it? Our HOPE and peace come through faith walking and intimately communicating with Abba Father on a regular basis. It is so easy for us to be tempted to “vent” to one another rather than to “bother” God with our concerns. He longs to hear from His children, and His Holy word commands us to pray without ceasing (1 Thessalonians 5:17). As I’m learning to pray more intentionally and seek Him in all things, He is teaching me to be still and pray while breathing Him in and out continually throughout my day. I challenge you on this day to embrace HOPE and allow the Holy Spirit to lead, guide and direct you to HIS perfect peace.

Consider all the blessings in your life, from the breath in your lungs to the ability to read the words on the screen in front of you, from the salvation in your soul and the people God has put you in relationship with. Take a moment and say thanks.

The evidence of his love is everywhere. And I experienced it through the fun we had together in the Family Advent Experience and the Community Thanksgiving Meal on Sunday.

Sunday, December 4th after each service we will be electing nominees to the church board. All members over the age of 15 can vote (age 13 and older can vote for NYI president). There is a flyer available at the Welcome Center with nominee information and pictures to assist you to prepare and to pray.

A note from Holly and Lester Strait. “We received an emergency placement of a 5 year old and nine month baby. They came with minimal oversized clothes and a pair shoes. Because you gave, the foster care team sprang into action to help us welcome the kids and supplied clothes and donations to help with the transition. We are also grateful the prayers and words of encouragement, the initial transition is challenging and scary for the young ones which often means sleepless nights. We are humbled by your giving, thank you! Thank you Stillmeadow!!”

The New American Welcome Center (NAWC) is helping many refugee families (read how they're helping here) and can use two kinds of assistance. First, they are looking for children's winter coats (0-18). Second, they are looking for full or queen size mattresses and bed frames so these families do not have to sleep on the floor. If you have coats, you can bring them to the church compassion closet (outside the family life center). If you have a bed, please contact Deb Deztel at the NAWC at (717) 819-0180.

Mercy Triumphs, Thanks from Florida, Advent is Coming!
Dear Saints,
I got to party with the kids in kids worship on Sunday, and it reminded me of the great joy and responsibility we have as a church family to share the message of Jesus to all generations (#JTAG).
The time with the kids also raised my hopes for our Family Advent Experience, which will take place in our worship services on November 20. (See the announcement below for more details.)
In our mini-series, we’re considering how Jesus served the world. He made friends, gave gifts, threw parties and told stories. This week, as we consider how to “throw parties” like Jesus, let’s remember that as our Good Shepherd, “He guides me along the right paths” and “prepares a table before me…” (Psalm 23). And as we welcome others, let’s remember James advice to not play favorites, because “mercy triumphs over judgment” (James 2:13)
Yes, mercy triumphs.
Think about that for yourself. If God wasn’t merciful, where would we be? Thank God that He “is rich in mercy” (Ephesians 2:4).
Now, let us be rich in mercy in this world of judgment, because “mercy triumphs.”
My Prayer:
God, you are the richest giver and most merciful Father. You give forgiveness of sins and second chances for life to anybody who would open their heart to You. Jesus, thank you for your sacrifice so that we can be forgiven and have a second chance. Spirit, help us be the kind of people who show mercy to whoever comes our way. Help us not play favorites in who we welcome into our lives, homes or church. We believe mercy triumphs, help us live according to that belief.

The Generous Giver, Preparing for Advent, Serving and Praying Together
Dear Church,
YOU ARE GIFTED! (BY THE GENEROUS GIVER)
And it has been a joy to hear how many of you have been spiritually gifted as you have shared your gifts with us. If you haven’t done that yet, take a couple minutes and find out your spiritual gifts through our spiritual gifts survey and share the results with us. We also would love to hear any ideas that you may have on how we can serve in our community!
Our reading in James 1:2-12 reminds us that “Our God…gives generously". He is the most generous giver in existence and you are some of his most incredible gifts.
Why has He gifted you the way He has? Why has He gifted York with the gift of you?
Well, the answer to those two questions is connected to Jesus’ mission so beautifully described in Isaiah 61. Jesus came to rebuild, restore and renew. As Jesus rebuilds us, restores us and renews us, he invites us to be a part of the rebuilding, restoring and renewal of our communities and the world.
THE GENEROUS GIVER HAS GENEROUSLY GIVEN THE GIFT OF YOU TO THE WORLD
My Prayer:
God, you are the most generous Giver. Thank you for giving the gift of your Son to rebuild, restore and renew our world. Jesus, thank you for showing us a life of generous giving and inviting us into your kind of life. Spirit, help us be the kind of people who joyfully join the rebuilding of families, the restoration of communities and the renewing of our city.

Do, be, do, be.
Dear Church,
Which came first? The chicken or the egg? Which comes first? Being a Christ follower or doing Christ-like things? Being the church or serving the world?
Perhaps it is a back and forth loop between “being” and “doing.” As a father, “I am” a dad, but “I do” dad-like things (make breakfast, offer care when there is sickness or sadness, etc).
Paul’s encouragement to the Church in Colossae spins the loop of “doing” and “being” together in Colossians 3:12-14. There we see that Christians are “God’s chosen people, holy and dearly loved.” And Christians are to do: “compassion, kindness, humility, gentleness and patience”, forbearance and forgiveness and love. Their “to do” list (love others) shows their “to be” identity (loved by God).
Sounds like a fun song: Do, Be, Do, Be, Do, Be...
As you consider your identity in Christ today, pray through the opportunities that come before you in your home, workplace, school and neighborhood. Remember that your primary identity is “chosen by God, holy and dearly loved.” Remember that your primary task is to “put on love.”
My Prayer:
Father, we have been given a new identity and a new mission in You. When You see us, You see dearly loved children, chosen for a sacred purpose. Jesus, as the Son of God, You showed us the perfect blend between “doing” and “being,” receiving the Father’s love and extending His care to others. Spirit, fill Your church with joy at being chosen and fill Your church with conviction to do the simple and courageous thing: love our neighbors as we have been loved by You.

Majesty, Trunkin, Journey House Paint Night
Dear Church,
Majesty is a word I rarely use, except when my breath is taken away at scenic vistas or brilliant night time skies. It is a fitting word to describe God.
“Lord, our Lord, how majestic is your name in all the earth.” (Psalm 8:1, 9)
Yes, God is breathtakingly awesome.
You can see His genius in the fall leaves and in the change of the season.
Take a moment now to look around and take in His greatness and glory.
Now, how incredible that the one who made all this is the one who made you and me. And He didn’t just create humans but “crowned them with glory and honor” (Psalm 8:5). To be crowned is to be given authority and dignity.
As we go through this “Be the Church: Serve the World” series, let’s keep this in mind. We’ve been given authority to serve as Jesus serves, to love as Jesus loves. “Crowned with glory.”
My Prayer:
Jesus, when we consider you, we remember you were crowned with a bunch of thorns. Your love took you to death for us. Would you lead us, your church, to love with that kind of depth. What a gift that you are mindful of humanity, that you look on us with care. Now, help us return the mindfulness and care to those in our homes, workplaces, schools and neighborhoods. May your majesty be on display in your church the way it is in the fall leaves.

Help For Refugees
The New American Welcome Center (NAWC) is helping many refugee families (read how they're helping here) and can use two kinds of assistance. First, they are looking for children's winter coats (0-18). Second, they are looking for full or queen size mattresses and bed frames so these families do not have to sleep on the floor. If you have coats, you can bring them to the church compassion closet (outside the family life center). If you have a bed, please contact Deb Deztel at the NAWC at (717) 819-0180.
Paint Night-Journey House Fundraiser

Love deeply with Hurricane relief, Habitat help, Trunk or Treat, etc
Dear Church,
WHY SHOULD WE “LOVE EACH OTHER DEEPLY”?
Well, the reason Peter gives is that “the end of all things is near.” And “because love covers over a multitude of sins.” (1 Peter 4:7-9)
HOW SHOULD WE “LOVE EACH OTHER DEEPLY”?
By “offering hospitality to each other” (serve in greeting ministry, welcoming people who you might not recognize on a Sunday morning or at the grocery store).
By “using whatever gift you have received to serve others” (like giving to or going on the mission trip to Florida to help, like joining the Habitat Faith Build, like joining in Trunk or Treat, or volunteering in other ways at Stillmeadow or in our community).
“So that in all things God may be praised through Jesus Christ.” (1 Peter 4:10-11)
My Prayer:
Jesus, you loved deeply…so much that you were willing to suffer for love. Would you arm your church with the attitude that is ready to suffer to show the goodness of your love? We confess that we shy away from pain or prefer security and safety, but sometimes that results in sin and acts of unlove. Help us love like you did. For God’s glory and the good of our community.

We are sending a team to Fort Myers, where two of our very own Stillmeadow Nazarenes have a home. Randy and JoAnn Hull will be leading a team to help clean up their neighborhood. Nearly 400 homes in their neighborhood sustained damage from the storm.

Repay with blessing, Sign up for Potluck and Directory
Dear Church,
Do not repay evil with evil or insult with insult. On the contrary, repay evil with blessing, because to this you were called so that you may inherit a blessing. (1 Peter 3:9)
Hold up! Is Peter saying the Christian “owes” blessings to those who “pay” them with evil?
Yes. Just like Jesus did (read 1 Peter 2:21-25). But notice that this comes with the promise “that you may inherit a blessing.” As Christians we have the “living hope” of a blessed inheritance in Christ “that can never perish, spoil or fade” (1 Peter 1:4).
Without God and without hope, all we have is hateful, wimpy retaliation or rebellion. Without God and without hope, we live like beasts who trample each other (so accurately portrayed in Daniel’s vision in Daniel 8).
With God and with His hope we have stouthearted love, “sympathetic, “compassionate” and “humble” (1 Peter 3:8).
My Prayer:
Jesus, help us schedule our lives around hope. Despair runs the streets, but your love rules the world. Help us love without fear. When we experience evil, strengthen us to repay it with blessing.

Pasta Fundraiser Update
Thank you to all who generously gave to the Youth Pasta Fundraiser Event! Your participation, donations of silent auction items and baked goods contributed to the success! The dinner was delicious, the fellowship was meaningful, smiles were plentiful, and your kindness was A-Mazing. Because you gave, our teens were blessed with $8,032 to offset the costs of upcoming youth events. Thank you for making an investment in their lives!
