Abstain, Nominate, Potluck and more
Dear Church,
Abstain.
One essential step in discipleship is to “abstain from sinful desires.” Is this because God doesn’t want his children to have fun? Hardly. It’s because those desires “wage war against your soul” (1 Peter 2:11).
Live good lives.
And the life of discipleship isn’t just abstinence…another essential step in discipleship is to live such good lives that the “pagans…see your good deeds and glorify God on the day he visits us” (1 Peter 2:12). So, Christians are people who abstain from evil and indulge in the good so that the world will see the evidence of God in us.
Daniel lived this way. When his jealous co-workers tried to find something wrong, “they could find no corruption in him, because he was trustworthy and neither corrupt nor negligent” (Daniel 6:4).
My Prayer:
Jesus, would you give Daniel’s strength of character to the people of the church today. We confess that we have done things that do not bring you glory. Help us abstain from evil and indulge in the good. Help us be trustworthy and not corrupt or negligent in our responsibilities. We want people to see evidence of your goodness and love in the way that we live.

On Sunday November 13, we will have our annual church board elections. Each Nazarene church is directed "to elect as church officers active members of the local church who profess the experience of entire sanctification and whose lives bear public witness to the grace of God that calls us to a holy life; who are in harmony with the doctrines, polity, and practices of the Church of the Nazarene; and who support the local church faithfully in attendance, active service, and with tithes and offerings. Church officers should be fully engaged in “making Christlike disciples in the nations.”" (For the rest of the manual statement) Stillmeadow board members serve three year terms.
If you have nominations, you may submit them on this form by September 28. Our nomination committee will review the nominees and then contact them to see if they will allow their name to run for election.

Our Welcome Bash message was “Serve York Together!” Each volunteer at Stillmeadow, through your acts of service in your area of ministry, play a crucial part for the mission of proclaiming Jesus to all generations.

Pray for those outside the faith, Nominate for church board
Dear Church,
Does God speak to people outside the faith?
Read Daniel 4 and you’ll see how God spoke to the pagan king Nebuchadnezzar. So yes!
What does it mean that God speaks to those outside the faith?
When Daniel showed up to help Nebuchadnezzar understand his dream, he was coming after God had worked in the king’s life. And when we show up in people’s lives, we are showing up to someone that God has been reaching out to before we came along.
What do we do with that?
Well, I think it means that we need to pray for God to show up to our friends and family members outside of the faith. Pray that they would be confused by what God spoke to them and that they would seek understanding. We know that those who ask, seek and knock, will be answered, find and have the door opened to them (Matthew 7:7-8). And it could very well be that we have the chance to be like Daniel and be the one to help them find the answer and open the door of faith.
Challenge:
Make a list of friends and family who are outside the faith. Regularly pray for the people on the list.
Watch for opportunities to point to God. Pray that God will open your eyes to see the opportunity and give you the wisdom and strength to share your faith.
Trust God to do His work. The reason Daniel had such an impact is because he trusted God as the Most High power in the universe.
Prayer:
Jesus, reveal yourself to all who are reading this and all in our church community. Most High God, give dreams to our friends and family members and even our political leaders in the way you spoke to King Nebuchadnezzar. And Spirit, would you open our eyes to see the open doors for the gospel to be shared and would you fill our hearts with love and wisdom to share the good news.

For September and October, we’re asking God to provide for, protect and direct the work of these missionaries and to pour out His Spirit of justice, grace and truth over these countries in the South America region of the Church of the Nazarene.

Will you pray?
Dear Church,
On Sunday began a 6 week study in the book of Daniel. Dale Ralph Davis describes the book as “a realistic survival manual for the saints.” The saint survives and lives on the primary theme of the book: God’s kingdom cannot be destroyed, His dominion will endure forever. In other words, God is in control.
And in our reading today (read along with us here), we are given the very practical example of how a saint endures through threats and trials: prayer.
What do you do when you encounter a problem? Being a part of God’s family does not exempt you from problems. Daniel faced a threat on his life and asked his friends “to plead for mercy from the God of heaven…” (Daniel 2:18). They prayed and “the mystery was revealed to Daniel in a vision” (Daniel 2:19).
Who do you turn to when you encounter a problem? Daniel had his friends and His God. We have each other. Small groups have been bands of believers for many of our people going through trials. If you’re not in a small group consider joining any of these. Or you can share your prayer request with the church at www.stillnaz.com/pray.
Do people know they can ask you to pray with them? Daniel’s friends must have proven themselves trustworthy that Daniel would approach them with his desperate request. Do the people in your family, small group, ministry group, workplace or school know that they can bring requests to you?
Challenge:
Ask your small group or family or coworkers how you can pray for them. Send out a text or give a call and ask “How can I pray for you today?”
Ask your small group or family or coworkers to pray for you. Be like Daniel and show that you need help by asking your family or small group or church family to pray with you.
Pray. Don’t just ask. Do it. Start by praying over your family, your small group, our church. Pray for the youth fall retreat this weekend, for the new small groups launching this fall, for any event you see listed in these emails. And let’s pray what Daniel prayed, asking for mercy and revelation.
Prayer:
Jesus, have mercy on all who are reading this and all in our church community across both campuses. You know the trials that each person is facing and you know the threats that rise against us as a church family. Spirit, would you reveal yourself to us and teach us “deep and hidden things” so that York will know that “wisdom and power are [yours]”. (Daniel 2:20-22).

We are really excited about our youth ministry pasta dinner and auction fundraiser! This is the final week to purchase tickets for the event, don’t wait to get your tickets right away. The event will be Saturday September 17 @ 6:00pm in the Family Life Center. Building Transition Update
We’re making progress in our building transition! The painting throughout the building is almost complete and the new kids welcome center is getting close.
Next: we’re updating the floors. The gym floor of the Family Life Center was painted last week and now we’re replacing the carpet in the cafe, children’s wing hallway, the children’s worship center and then we’ll be replacing the carpet in the Family Life Center.
After this we’ll be updating our worship chairs, decorating the walls and updating our cafe furniture!
We’re grateful for the many hands that are making light work!
Let’s continue to pray for all those doing the work and for the future generations who will benefit from it. If you haven’t had a chance to give to the Renovation Plus Fund to help with the cost of the new chairs, you can give here or in your weekly in person giving.

Prepare for Fall ‘22
Dear Church,
What an incredible celebration at the Welcome Bash! We are so grateful to each person who played a part that day, from the food vendors to the people who stayed after to clean up, from the parking team to the worship team, from the greeters to those who made room for others to sit. Praise God!
As I read Jesus’ prayer in John 17 today I was struck by this:
The more sanctified we become the more unified we become. The more unified we become the more the world sees God’s love in us.
Jesus prayed for us to be sanctified and unified. His love liberates us from our sin, so that we can live a sanctified life. As we live that way, His love impacts our local area (family, neighbors, co-workers, teammates and classmates). And as we live that way, we find ourselves unified in Him, collaborating with each other to reveal His truth and love to each other and the watching world.

PS…I’m excited about the new series that starts this Sunday. The Indestructible Kingdom is a 6 week exploration of the book of Daniel. God has a lot to teach us through the life of Daniel and I look forward to listening to Him together.
Pray for the Bash, Prepare for Fall ‘22
Dear Church,
How did the early church have such a great impact on the world? It wasn’t by their own strength and willpower. It was because they received “power when the Holy Spirit [came on them]” (Acts 1:8). With that Spirit-power they went and told the story to those in their capital city Jerusalem, then in the surround areas of Judea and Samaria and then to the ends of the earth (and all the way through the centuries and over the miles to York, PA today).
Will you pray with me for the Welcome Bash?
I’m praying that this Sunday will be Spirit-filled and life-changing, and that those gathered there will be empowered to share Jesus’ love and truth with those in their homes, neighborhoods, schools and workplaces.
Will you pray that way too?
If the Stillmeadow church family is going to make a difference in York, it won’t be on our own strength or willpower, but by the strength and courage that only comes from the Holy Spirit.

Emotionally Healthy Spirituality
This 8 week course begins Wednesday, September 28th at 6:30PM in Sprenkle House 2nd fl., and is led by Pastor Brad Shaffer. This class unpacks core biblical principles to guide you into an experience of lasting, beneath-the–surface transformation in your relationship with Christ. There is a $30 cost for the books. Building Transition Update
We’re making progress in our building transition! The painting throughout the building is almost complete and the new kids welcome center is getting close.
Next: we’re updating the floors. The gym floor of the Family Life Center is being painted this week and weekend (August 22-28). Then in September, we’ll replace the carpet in the café, children’s wing hallway, the children’s worship center and the Family Life Center.
After this we’ll be updating our worship chairs, decorating the walls and updating our cafe furniture!
We’re grateful for the many hands that are making light work!

Backpack Blessing this Sunday and Welcome Bash is 10 days away!
Dear friends,
As we read Mark 8:27-33 we see two essential discipleship questions. How we answer these questions determines how we live.
1) Who do you say that Jesus is?
2) Do you have in mind the concerns of God or the concerns of humanity?
In our passage we see that Peter answered the first question correctly. Jesus is the Messiah! And on top of that, he is the King, Son of God, Master, Savior, Healer, Brilliant Teacher, Friend of Sinners, our Hero. As Christians, this is the first step of discipleship…admitting that Jesus is ALL THAT, and that I am not. In this first step, we admit our need for Him and His salvation.
And after that first step, we begin the process of moving our mind off our human concerns to the concerns of God. Even though Peter answered the first question correctly, he tried to rebuke Jesus when Jesus revealed that his plan as Messiah was to suffer and die. Peter still had human concerns and needed to have his perspective transformed. And as we follow Peter’s life, we see how that changed, as he himself joined Jesus in being willing to suffer and die for the cause of the good news.
So, as you go about your day, talk to Jesus about these questions. Ask Him to show you who He is. Be like Peter and admit that He the Messiah. Then ask Him to give you His perspective so that you will have in mind the concerns of God in everything you do.

Child Dedication Event
Each year we have the privilege of partnering with families to offer them an event where they can dedicate their child(ren) to the Lord. Dedicating your child(ren) is an amazing decision we are blessed to be a part of. Our next dedication service is on September 24th with a special prayer time on September 25th during the 9 and 10:30 AM services. This event is a special time for you to commit to raising your children to love, know and serve the Lord as you raise them to follow your example. We would love to partner with you for this milestone event in your family’s life. Stillnaz Weekly Update: Welcome Bash is 17 days away!
Dear friends,
I have yet to meet someone who loves waiting in lines. But in today’s word from Isaiah 30:15-18, we see God inviting the people of Judah essentially to wait in His line. They wanted the convenience and ease of “fast horses.” But when they put their hope in horses, they found themselves easily scared away.
Waiting on God is not convenient or easy, but it brings salvation, strength and blessing.
Sometimes in our efforts to “streamline” and make life “efficient” we can elevate “convenience” to god-like status in our hearts. This has two negative effects. First, it causes me to only obey God when it’s comfortable and convenient. Second, it causes me to (over)react to people who interrupt my flow as if they are “disturbing the peace.”
Today may we “wait on the Lord” and find salvation and strength in Him. May we receive His grace and compassion, and join Him in showing it to others in our world. And as we do, may we receive each person not as a disturbance but as a wonder to behold, a soul to be cherished and a spirit to be encouraged.

Youth Pasta Dinner: Sept 17
We are planning our Pasta Dinner for Saturday, September 17th. The event is open to all youth group members, and the success of this event is critical to participation by both parents and teens alike. We'll require help from parents in a planning capacity, and participation from youth to serve at the dinner.
We will be holding an initial planning meeting tonight, 8/11 at 7pm via Zoom. During this meeting, we will discuss...

Dear friends,
As I read Mark 3:1-6 this morning I was struck by these three thoughts.
I need to beware of having a stubborn and shriveled heart.
I need to be aware of my need for a soft and restored heart.
I need Jesus to soften and restore my heart.
The symptoms of a stubborn heart
The stubborn hearts of the Pharisees were more diseased than the man with the shriveled hand. They resisted God’s movement, ignored the needs of others and opposed Jesus’ healing.
When I find my rest or find my identity in anything less than Jesus, I too am prone to a stubborn heart. With a stubborn heart I am irritated by others’ needs, I will seek to escape my problems with substances or shows or job performance, or I will hold a judgmental attitude towards others.
Pray for soft and restored hearts
As we go about our everyday lives, let us be honest with ourselves and Jesus about where we are stubborn. Let us confess our need for the Spirit to soften our hearts and ask Him to restore our shriveled imaginations. And let’s show evidence of a heart being restored by serving others in their need.
Pray for the Kids at Kids Camp
Our kids and pre-teens are wrapping up their week at camp today and tomorrow. Pray for them and the workers, asking God to speak to their young hearts as He spoke to Josiah and Jeremiah in their youth.

On Sunday we began our mini-series on Rest.
Today’s reading is Ephesians 1:18-23.
Why are we able to rest? Because in Jesus we have “the riches of his glorious inheritance” and a God who “raised Christ from the dead” and a Savior who “fills everything in everyway.” We have everything we need, God’s power is greater than death and Jesus’ authority is over everything.
In other words: We can rest because God is in control.
Take a deep breath and ask God “that the eyes of your heart may be enlightened.” And relax in Him that “God placed all things under his feet and appointed him to be head over everything for the church.”

Building Transition Update
It is so cool to think of the lives that have been impacted over the past 84 years of ministry through the Church of the Nazarene here in York. As we went from being “First Church of the Nazarene” to “Stillmeadow Church of the Nazarene” we have had 7 different locations for regular worship (not to mention the times we worshiped at Cousler Park or the Fairground or our front lawn) and countless other spaces for small groups and family ministry.
In each space, something sacred happened as the people of God gathered and poured out their hearts and worked together for God’s kingdom. We wonder what will happen in the next 84 years of ministry (2106)!
Our team has been working hard on the newest transition of our building, preparing for more impact and transformation for the years to come. We have cleaned out and rearranged storage closets, taken things off the walls to prepare for paint, moved our video tech team out of the middle of the Family Life Center, and more.
UPCOMING CHANGES
We are so thankful for the volunteers, staff and the trustees of our board that are working together to update the building. Over the next couple weeks and months, here are some of the updates you’ll see…
-new paint on hallways, classrooms, Kid’s Worship Center, and the Family Life Center
-a new kid’s welcome center
-a new security door in the Stillnaz Kid’s hallway
-updated flooring for Kid’s Worship Center, Café, hallways, and the Family Life Center
-black drape for the stage and walls of the Family Life Center
-wall decorations throughout the building to tell God’s story of Stillmeadow
-mailboxes taken down (and will be modified and put up for holiday card giving)
-new chairs in the worship center (for both campuses)
Pray with us
As we follow Him through these transitions, pray with us that God will continue to reach people of every age, race and gender with His grace through our ministries. Pray that, with Jesus, we will be unified in following Him and making Him known to our community.

Because we want to be people who pray relentlessly, we cover the earth with our prayers through the year. For July and August, we’re asking God to provide for, protect and direct the work of these missionaries and to pour out His Spirit of justice, grace and truth over these countries in the USA and Canada field of the Church of the Nazarene.

Pray for Mission Week, Building Transition Update
Dearly Beloved,
The letter Paul wrote to the church in Corinth is a bit of an emotional roller coaster as Paul tried to navigate the relational tension they’ve experienced. But, in today’s reading, at the close of the letter, Paul said: “Everything we do, dear friends, is for your strengthening.” (2 Corinthians 12:19)
Is that the goal for your relationships? To strengthen those people in your life?
Can you think of someone whose life strengthens yours? Thank God for that person and consider this an invitation to prioritize strengthening others in Christ.
If you truly want everything you do to strengthen others, then you are likely going to need to ask God for help to stop certain practices. Paul was concerned that the church in Corinth might have the practices of “discord, jealousy, fits of rage, selfish ambition, slander, gossip, arrogance and disorder” (12:20) or “impurity, sexual sin and debauchery” (12:21). If any of those things are in our lives, they hinder our work of strengthening others.
Prayer…Jesus, You loved perfectly and died for us, so that we might be reconciled to you and be a part of your ministry of reconciliation. We cannot carry your message of grace if we practice discord, jealousy, rage, selfishness, slander, gossip, arrogance or disorder. We cannot continue your ministry of reconciliation if we are living lives of impurity, sexual sin or debauchery. Help us overcome whatever sin within us so that we may strengthen others with our lives.

Pray for Mission Week
This week (July 11-15) 40 teens and youth workers are serving in York, Kutztown, and Salisbury, MD. It will be a great week for our teens to grow by serving others locally in York, in surrounding counties, and even in Maryland. The teens will be serving in areas of compassionate ministries to help clothe the needy, serving other churches, and even building a wheelchair ramp for a veteran. Would you join us in praying for them from for the rest of their time? Please pray for God to move in the hearts of our teens, leaders, and those they will be serving, as well as physical safety as they travel for the various service projects.
GriefShare
Led by Pastor Kathy Foltz, GriefShare is special weekly support group for people grieving the death of someone close. It’s a place where you can be around people who understand how you feel and the pain of your loss. At GriefShare you’ll learn valuable information that will help you through this difficult time in your life. The next 13 week cycle of GriefShare begins Saturday, August 6th, 10AM-12 Noon. Building Transition Update
It is so cool to think of the lives that have been impacted over the past 84 years of ministry through the Church of the Nazarene here in York. As we went from being “First Church of the Nazarene” to “Stillmeadow Church of the Nazarene” we have had 7 different locations for regular worship (not to mention the times we worshiped at Cousler Park or the Fairground or our front lawn) and countless other spaces for small groups and family ministry.
In each space, something sacred happened as the people of God gathered and poured out their hearts and worked together for God’s kingdom. We wonder what will happen in the next 84 years of ministry (2106)!
Our team has been working hard on the newest transition of our building, preparing for more impact and transformation for the years to come. We have cleaned out and rearranged storage closets, taken things off the walls to prepare for paint, moved our video tech team out of the middle of the Family Life Center, and more.
UPCOMING CHANGES
We are so thankful for the volunteers, staff and the trustees of our board that are working together to update the building. Over the next couple weeks and months, here are some of the updates you’ll see…
-new paint on hallways, classrooms, Kid’s Worship Center, and the Family Life Center
-a new kid’s welcome center
-a new security door in the Stillnaz Kid’s hallway
-updated flooring for Kid’s Worship Center, Café, hallways, and the Family Life Center
-black drape for the stage and walls of the Family Life Center
-wall decorations throughout the building to tell God’s story of Stillmeadow
-mailboxes taken down (and will be modified and put up for holiday card giving)
-new chairs in the worship center (for both campuses)
Pray with us
As we follow Him through these transitions, pray with us that God will continue to reach people of every age, race and gender with His grace through our ministries. Pray that, with Jesus, we will be unified in following Him and making Him known to our community.

Just as Paul notes the generosity of the Corinthian church in our weekly readings in this sermon series, I want to commend the Stillmeadow Church for your generosity to the Rise Against Hunger event last week. You gave $4,626!! We bagged 10,000 meals to feed hungry children and adults. Your heart of a servant is evident and is a blessing in so many ways. Please accept this sincere thanks from Erma Shaffer and the Mission team at Stillmeadow.
Missions Prayer Emphasis for July and August-USA/Canada
Because we want to be people who pray relentlessly, we cover the earth with our prayers through the year. For July and August, we’re asking God to provide for, protect and direct the work of these missionaries and to pour out His Spirit of justice, grace and truth over these countries in the USA and Canada field of the Church of the Nazarene.
Now to him who is able to do immeasurably more than all we ask or imagine, according to his power that is at work within us, to him be glory in the church and in Christ Jesus to all generations, for ever and ever! Amen. (Ephesians 3:20-21)

Dearly Beloved,
Did you know…”God is able to bless you abundantly, so that in ALL THINGS and at ALL TIMES, having ALL THAT YOU NEED, you will abound in every good work?” (2 Corinthians 9:8)
Think about that.
His blessings are more abundant than fireworks around the 4th of July.
And his blessings are for his people to abound in every good work.
You, dear sister, dear brother, have a God who gives you what you need to do the good even when your circumstances are tough and your emotions are frazzled and your friends are gone.
What good work is God calling you to give to?
And as you give, do you give with a grudge or with gratitude? (God loves a cheerful giver! 2 Corinthians 9:7)
Paul says that as you give “you will be enriched in EVERY WAY so that you can be generous on EVERY OCCASION” (2 Corinthians 9:11).

-updated flooring for Kid’s Worship Center, Café, hallways, and the Family Life Center

-black drape for the stage and walls of the Family Life Center
-wall decorations throughout the building to tell God’s story of Stillmeadow

Instead of commentary on the reading for the day (daily readings can be found here), here are a few quotes from Paul from 2 Corinthians 5:11-6:2…
We know what it is to fear the Lord, so we try to persuade others.
For Christ’s love compels us, because we are convinced that one died for all…that those who live should no longer live for themselves but for him who died for them and was raised again.
We regard no one from a worldly point of view.
If anyone is in Christ, the new creation has come: the old has gone, the new is here!
All this is from God, who reconciled us to himself through Christ and gave us the ministry of reconciliation: that God was reconciling the world to himself in Christ, not counting people’s sins against them. And he has committed to us the message of reconciliation.
As God’s co-workers, we urge you not to receive God’s grace in vain…(because)…now is the time of God’s favor, now is the day of salvation.

What a great week we had with 173 children and 61 helpers!
We learned at VBS last week how to “Make Waves” in our world by showing Jesus’ love to others. One small act of obedience to Jesus can cause a ripple effect and change the world around us. Thank you to the volunteers who said “Yes!” to VBS and started a ripple in the lives of the families in our community. Thank you for your time, example, and love that you gave to the kids in our community. We believe that there were some seeds planted, or some ripples started, that the Holy Spirit will turn into some big waves!

Chicken BBQ Saturday, Thanks VBS Peeps, and Rise Against Hunger…
Hey smelly saints!
You ever smell something that immediately reminds you of someone or someplace?
As believers, Paul describes us as “the aroma of Christ” (2 Corinthians 2:15). So, in a very real way, our lives are to smell like Jesus, to remind the world of Someone Else, someone who has overcome sin and death.
How do we relate to others like that? “in Christ we speak before God with sincerity, as those sent from God.” (2 Corinthians 2:17)
True, aromatic, smelly, transformative ministry is…
“In Christ”…in intimate union with Him, not apart from Him
“Before God”…under the Father’s watchful care, in His constant presence
“With sincerity”…full-hearted devotion, integrity and honesty, not faking it or putting on a show
“Sent from God”…not for our own fame, but according to His word and will.
Let’s be smelly today, for the sake of Christ, the glory of God and the good of our families and neighbors. Relax…this is not about you, but about Him, the One who overcame the grave and is calling people to Himself through his smelly saints and with his Holy Spirit today.

A word of encouragement as we finish our series on work…
“So then, those who suffer according to God’s will should commit themselves to their faithful Creator and continue to do good.” (1 Peter 4:19)
When you face resistance for following Christ, it may be tempting or even easy to retreat and withdraw from doing good. But Peter reminds the early church, who faced great resistance to not give up on doing good. So, today, let us remember that our God is the faithful Creator and commit to His creative way of love in this world.

James 5:16 Therefore confess your sins to each other and pray for each other so that you may be healed. The prayer of a righteous person is powerful and effective.
Scripture Insights Have we ever lived in a more divided time? God wants to heal the divisiveness. If we come in humility to pray for each other, God may heal us. I desperately want to experience the kind of healing that breaks boundaries—the kind of healing that brings unity, alignment, and passion to our shared mission.
However, the necessity of confession can be scary. I do not want to analyze how I contribute to the divisiveness. What are my sins? What am I posting? How am I speaking to others? How have I been acting? If I want to be the “righteous person” who prays powerfully and effectively, then I must first take an honest look at myself, recognize my sins, confess my sins, pray with and for others, and experience the healing God wants to give.
I want to be the Christlike disciple who prays with power and effectiveness.
Today’s Prayer God, help me become the kind of person who seeks healing. Give me eyes to see my duplicity. Give me humility to confess. Grant to us the healing you desperately want to give. Bless the church with more Christlike disciples.

An incredible way to share Jesus with the next generation is to volunteer at Vacation Bible School. You can help with snacks, games, or be a part of small group with kids.

All children ages 3 through 5th grade will attend their normal Sunday Worship class and after a celebration will move to their new class (9 & 10:30 services)! Keep Praying, Grad Sunday is June 5, Support our Intern
Dear Friends,
On Sunday, we explored the truth that every human is made in God’s image and “crowned with glory and splendor” (Psalm 8). So our hearts break when we hear the stories of fellow humans destroyed through recent violence as they have been in Buffalo, Uvalde and here in York. We grieve over these losses and pour out our grief to the God who grieves with us. And we pray for the victims and those serving the victims in this time.
It seems fitting that on this day of our 40 day prayer journey with Nazarenes from around USA/Canada focuses on praying for “all people…and all those in authority”. Let us pray for all the people grieving and for those in authority to have wisdom in bringing justice and ensuring safety for the next generation.
1 Timothy 2:1-2 I urge, then, first of all, that petitions, prayers, intercession and thanksgiving be made for all people—for kings and all those in authority, that we may live peaceful and quiet lives in all godliness and holiness.

Scripture Insights In Paul’s first recorded letter to Timothy, a young leader appointed to give guidance to the Ephesian church, Paul offers Timothy advice for his congregation.
Chapter 2 addresses the importance of proper worship. Paul’s priority for prayer as worship must not be lost on us. He urges our prayers to include “petitions” (making requests for specific needs), “prayers” (bringing people before the throne of God), “intercession” (appealing boldly on their behalf), and “thanksgiving” (offering thankfulness for them).
Paul goes on to specifically exhort the Ephesians to pray “for kings and all those in authority” (v. 2). Why? The duty of the state is to keep the peace, protect its citizens, preserve law and order, and punish evil. John Stott questioned, “[Is] the slow progress towards peace and justice in the world, and towards world evangelization, . . . due more than anything else to the prayerlessness of the people of God? . . . What [would] happen if God’s people throughout the world learned to wait upon him in believing, persevering prayer?” Our petitions, prayers, intercession, and thanksgiving are to be made for everyone!
Today’s Prayer King of Kings and Lord of Lords, guide us to pray for your coming kingdom. Forgive us for the times we have made it about our perceived empires. May your will be done on earth as it is in heaven.

Scripture Insights Paul is reminding us of the wonderful gift the Holy Spirit is to us. The Spirit stands by to provide the assistance we need. When we are weary and weak, the Spirit helps us. When we don’t know how or what to pray, the Spirit intercedes for us with sounds from deep in the heart that cannot be put into words. When we begin to veer off course, the Spirit intercedes to bring us into alignment with God’s will. The Holy Spirit’s power is available to us today— strengthening us, shaping us, directing us, and leading us into God’s good plan for our lives. What an advocate we have in the Holy Spirit! What a wonderful gift God has provided his people! What a wonderful privilege to live life in the Spirit!
Today’s Prayer Father, we are grateful for the gift of the Holy Spirit. As you pour out your Spirit upon us, may our ears be attuned to your voice, our hearts to your desires, and our lives to your will.

Scripture Insights from Mark Bane, Director, Evangelism and New Church Development
At times the world seems to have gone mad. Most of us would rather be transported out of it. “Beam us up, Jesus,” would be our prayer. The disciples probably had similar thoughts. Jesus made some pretty awful predictions about what would be ahead for them: others will try to kill you, you will weep and mourn while others rejoice, you will be filled with grief, the world will hate you, and so on. These all sound like things sensible people would want to escape. Who wouldn’t? The disciples were about to experience that “dark night of the soul.” Jesus, knowing this, doesn’t pray that they would escape from it but that his Father would protect them in it. This reminds me of when I was a passenger in a van that rolled over three times while traveling eighty miles per hour. I was sure I was about to die. When the dust settled, I walked out unharmed. I think this is what Jesus is asking the Father: when the dust settles, let them walk out unharmed.
Today’s Prayer
Father, remind us today that Jesus asked you to protect us from the one who seeks to kill us, steal from us, and destroy us. Quiet our hearts in the midst of turmoil, and speak what you wish to say to your church.
