DAY 5 OF HALF-MILLION MOBILIZATION

We are on day 5 of a 40 day prayer journey with Nazarenes from around USA/Canada. Join in by meditating on this verse and praying. Keep up with the daily devotions at the button below.

Mark 11:25 “And when you stand praying, if you hold anything against anyone, forgive them, so that your Father in heaven may forgive you your sins.”

Scripture Insights from Sam Vassel, District Superintendent, Metro New York

Jesus links our privilege of being forgiven by God to our responsibility to forgive those who offend us. In Luke 11:4, the correlation is just stated “forgive us . . . for we also forgive everyone.” In Matthew 6:14-15, after Jesus teaches the fundamentals of prayer in seven petitions, the only petition that elicits his added emphasis and explanation was the one having to do with asking God for forgiveness. Nazarene New Testament scholar Roger Hahn noted that “verses 14-15 amplify this point and make it clear that forgiveness from God will be forfeited if we refuse to forgive those who have offended us.”1 Nelson Mandela insightfully said before he left prison, “As I stand before the door of my freedom, I realize that if I do not leave my pain, anger and bitterness behind me, I will still be in prison.” Forgiveness means letting go. Our release from guilt by God is simply inextricably linked to our letting go of the pain, anger, and bitterness we hold toward those who have wronged us.

Today’s Prayer

Father, in the name of Jesus, who asked for forgiveness for those crucifying him, please forgive my sins and fill me with the Spirit of Christ so that I, like Christ, will be able to forgive those who hurt me deeply.

Missions Prayer Emphasis for May & June-Asia Pacific

Because we want to be people who pray relentlessly, we cover the earth with our prayers through the year. For May and June, we’re asking God to provide for, protect and direct the work of these missionaries and to pour out His Spirit of justice, grace and truth over these countries in the Asia Pacific region of the Church of the Nazarene.

BUILDING TRANSITION UPDATE

Did you know that over the last 84 years of ministry in York (we were formally organized in 1938), we have had 7* different locations for Sunday adult worship? 1 on George Street, 1 on Princess Street, 3 different sanctuaries on Pine Street, and now 2 on Stillmeadow Lane. As God was faithful through all of those transitions, we believe He is being faithful in our current transition at our Stillmeadow Lane Campus.

In the last two years, we discovered new ways to more effectively use our Stillmeadow Lane campus. We can provide greater security and flow for our children’s ministries by having them worship in the Worship Center and meet on the east side of the building. This means we have moved adults to the 7th location for worship in the Family Life Center on the west side of the building.

We are grateful to the volunteers, staff and the trustees of our board that are working together to update the building. Over the next couple weeks we’re cleaning out storage closets, taking things off the walls and updating our new adult worship space. As we grow, so does our need for storage. As we continue Christ’s mission, we are updating our walls to tell the story and mission of Jesus to All Generations.

Pray with us

As we follow Him through these transitions, pray with us that God will continue to reach people of every age, race and gender with His grace through our ministries. Pray with Jesus that we will be unified in following Him and making Him known to our community.

Half-Million Mobilization, Building Updates, Summer Plans

“Jesus walked along with them”

In Luke 24:13-35, the Resurrected Jesus surprised two disappointed and disillusioned disciples by walking with them and explaining “to them what was said in all the Scriptures concerning himself” (24:27).

At first they didn’t recognize that it was Jesus! But when he broke bread and gave it to them “their eyes were opened” (24:31) and they said, “weren’t our hearts burning within us while he…opened the Scriptures to us?” (24:32)

Will you pray for open eyes and burning hearts?

So many people today are living with disappointed and disillusioned lives, with eyes closed to the gospel and cold hearts. But look what Jesus can do! He can open the eyes and stir a fire within.

Today, I pray for open eyes and burning hearts within Stillmeadow and among the people of York. I ask God to start with me, showing me where I need to grow in understanding and stirring within me a zeal for His work.

Will you pause to pray with us?

Our current series is breaking down prayer with the acronym: PRAY. P for Pause. R for Rejoice and Reflect. A for Ask and Y for Yield.

And see the announcement below about praying with 500,000 people in the Half-Million Mobilization that begins this Sunday.

We want to see hearts in York and around the world transformed by Christ. Let’s pray for revival and renewal in ourselves, our church, our community and nation.

New Series, Teen Car Wash, Building Updates, Baptisms!

“Follow me!”

In John 21:15-23 the Resurrected Jesus invited Peter to follow Him, even after Peter had failed him by denying him. This is the way of Jesus—offering renewal, even to those who have turned their back on him. Peter accepted the invitation and helped many other people accept the invitation.

Will you follow Jesus by cultivating growth in this next season?

No matter how you have lived the last year(s) of your life, Jesus gives you the same invitation: Follow me.

This will mean adjusting your life to His way of life, allowing Him to direct your steps and correct your attitude. This will mean being intentional about how you invest your time, relationships, money and resources.

Our new series will focus on how to be intentional in cultivating growth in the Resurrecting Life of Jesus. As Peter intentionally followed Jesus and helped change the world with God’s grace, Stillmeadow is being invited to follow Jesus and help change York (City and County) with God’s grace. The same power that raised Jesus from the dead is at work in those who accept Jesus’ invitation to follow Him!

 1 C O R I N T H I A N S 1 1 : 2 3 - 2 6

In today’s passage, before all else Jesus pauses and gives thanks. His example teaches us that gratitude is an important place to begin. When we discipline ourselves to give thanks, we refuse to slip into a state of forgetfulness.

Gratitude is about making space to meditate on who God is, has been, and promises to forever be.

Where have you seen God’s goodness this week? Have you witnessed God’s artistry? Have you experienced the love of God, the comfort of God, the peace   of God? There are seasons of plenty when listing the good comes easy and there are challenging seasons when we have to search a little deeper. Gratitude is important for both types of circumstances. In today’s passage, Jesus has just  been betrayed and is anticipating death, but he searches for the steady good, draws close to God, and gives thanks.

Gratitude isn’t about denying the difficulties of life or ignoring the brokenness of the world, but it’s a way that we remember that darkness doesn’t get the final word. And that is the truth we’re called to live out as Christians.

May we go forth today declaring the goodness of God and may we find ourselves transformed by it. May we radiate the joy and peace of a grateful heart. May we be people who remember.

Easter Surprise this Saturday, Prayer Week Next week!

H E B R E W S    2 :  1  -  9

The writer of Hebrews quotes Psalm 8 in verses 6-8. I am struck by this one portion, “What is mankind that you are mindful of them.” A few years ago, a popular song titled, “I Am a Friend of God” was sung in many quarters. This song highlighted the same concept. The simplicity of God’s plan is stated in John 3:16. It requires belief. Jesus reminded the disciples and the crowds, it requires a child-like faith to believe. Many times, we want to complicate our relationship with God and our receipt of salvation through Jesus. But then we find a gem reminding us of how simple God wants our relationship to be.

I often wonder what those walks in the Garden of Eden with God were like. I am often amazed that God knows me even better than my spouse. I know she has never counted the hairs (or lack of hair) on my head. I know I have not counted hers and yet the simple truth is God wants a relationship with you and me. It begins with a simple belief in His Son who we celebrate this Lenten season.

In the words of The Psalmist, the Hebrew writer, and the modern songwriter Israel Houghton: “Who am I that You are mindful of me? That You hear me when I call. Is it true that You are thinking of me? How you love me, it’s amazing.”

Today, I challenge you to return to your days of simple faith and stand amazed in the sight of God’s love and believe all over again.

I S A I A H    4 3 :  1  -  7

Think of a time in your life where you were going through a struggle or difficulty? How did you feel in the midst of difficulty? Did you ever question or ask: Why God? Why me?

Today’s passage reminds us to not allow fear to invade as we walk through difficult times. The Lord our God will always be with us and see us through, and never leave our side during these times.

This is a true reminder of God’s character. No matter the difficulty, He will be right beside us, carrying us along the way. He will not allow us to drown in a river of difficulty or burn in a fire of oppression. Instead God will see us   through whatever we are facing.

We as Christians can trust that no matter what hard thing comes our way, our Lord will be right there with us on that journey each and every step.

What difficulty are you facing today? Have you given it to God and allowed him to lead you through it?

What fears are holding you back from giving the difficulty to God and allowing him to lead? Give those fears to God and allow him to work in you and lead you through this time.

Men’s Conference, Prayer Week, Easter Surprise Drive Thru and more

2 C O R I N T H I A N S 4 : 1 6 - 5 : 5

I love the HGTV show, Unsellable Houses. The hosts are twin sisters, Leslie and Lyndsay. They work with their clients to create a win-win situation by contributing some of their own cash for renovations in order to sell the house for top dollar. They call it a “Twin-Win.”

While I have been reading todays scriptures over the last weeks, I kept thinking about how we are in a win-win situation. Although, yes, we may   see and feel our physical body wasting away/dying, our inner being is   always being renewed because of the Holy Spirit's work in us. This life we are living right now can be very hard, both physically and emotionally; but this physical existence going on right now is only the beginning. For only a while longer, we carry on in these bodies, these "clay pots," as Paul wrote in vs. 7. Far more glory awaits us in Eternity.

As we are reminded this Lenten season of just what Jesus did on the cross  for us, may we not "lose heart." May we keep our eyes on the truly  important things of staying rooted in Jesus and modeling our life after His, and bringing others along with us on this journey.

R E V E L A T I O N 2 : 8 - 1 1

As I’m writing this, it is the 2022 Winter Olympics. It’s fun to see athletes compete and win prizes, although not all will earn one! These athletes have worked extremely hard to earn the chance to attend the Olympics and earn a prize.

Our passage today was written to the church in Smyrna, which was famous for  its athletic games. The trophy for the champion was the victor’s crown. Jesus  says in verse 10 that we are to “be faithful, even to the point of death, and I     will give you life as your victor’s crown”. I love how Jesus spoke to this church in terms that they could relate to! We all will face trials in our lives, some will bring us pain and suffering, but we must remain faithful to following Christ in  our lives and we are promised eternal life. “Blessed is the one who perseveres under trial because, having stood the test, that person will receive the crown of life that the Lord has promised to those who love Him” (James 1:12).

Although pain is part of life, we do not have to suffer without faith. As we are faithful, we are reminded and comforted that this pain is temporary and Jesus has offered us the hope of eternal life with Him. Good news—that eternal life starts when you accept Jesus’ gift of salvation, we do not have to wait until Heaven to start living life with Him!

While the Olympians work hard to win their prize, we are offered ours for free,  we just need to remain faithful (verse 10b).

How can you remain faithful during your suffering? Take time to talk to God (pray) about your pain and ask Him to give you the strength to persevere.

Free Books and Upcoming Building Transitions

Over the past two years we adjusted our building usage to the COVID pandemic and discovered new ways to more effectively use the building God has given us on Stillmeadow Lane. To provide greater security and flow for our children’s ministries, we have moved all children on Sunday mornings to the east side of the building. We have moved Sunday morning youth ministry to the center of our building and have moved adult worship to the west side of our building, the Family Life Center. Our staff and the trustees of our board are working together to update the building, so be on the watch for updates!

As part of the building transition, we are downsizing our library and giving out free books! Thanks to Lynda and Jeff Phillips for their faithful work with the library over the years and through this transition! The books will be available through Easter.

“Be always on the watch,” Jesus warned his disciples and instructed them to pray so they could stand firm. No one is immune to the anxieties of life. Over time, the cares of this world will overwhelm a person who caters to the whims of the crowd. The chief priests and teachers of the law were afraid of the  people. They had studied the written scriptures their entire lives, but bowed     to public opinion. They knew what they should do but lacked the fortitude to commit to God.

Likewise, Judas had heard Jesus’s words for three years but had not taken them to heart. Day after day, he sat in the shadow of the Master but stayed on the outskirts. He did not seek God’s Will but sought personal gain. Disillusioned, he let down his guard and allowed Satan to overcome his will. The result was his betrayal of Jesus.

How can we find the strength to ignore public opinion and live our lives according to God’s plans? How can we live, not in Jesus’ shadow, but be firmly in the center of His will? The answer to both questions, of course, is through prayer, studying, and applying the Scriptures.

P S A L M 9 1 : 1 - 2 , 9 - 1 6

Friend, do you long for a moment of silence from the noise of this chaotic world? Do you desire to find perfect rest curling up in the lap of your Heavenly Father? I challenge you to take a moment right here and now to breathe HIM in and just lay back into His wide-open arms. Cry out to Jesus! May His peace overwhelm you and take you to a place of stillness.

I love acronyms and one of my favorites is P. R.A.Y (Praise-Repent-Ask-Yield). Sounds easy enough, right? I must confess yielding is difficult for me. Have you ever heard the phrase “silence is golden”? This act of yielding requires us to be “actively silent” before our God to hear Him speak.

The philosopher Plato said, “Wise men speak because they have something to say; Fools because they have to say something.” I pray that the Lord will give you wisdom to speak when needed and strength to keep silent when necessary.

Sometimes we say more without words.

Lord, wrap us in the knowledge of YOU so that our trust is no longer in YOU but is YOU. Help us find perfect trust in resting in You and Your forever faithfulness. Amen.

Responding to the Earthquake

Dear Stillmeadow Family and Friends,

Greetings in the strong name of our Resurrected King, the Alpha and Omega, the friend of Sinners, the Savior of the World, Jesus Christ.

This week the countries of Turkey and Syria have been hit with a devastating earthquake. What can we do in the face of such tragedy? Here are a few ways to respond.

GRIEVE

Pour out your feelings of hurt and sadness about the loss of life. Tell God how horrible you think this is. Remember He is “the Father of compassion and the God of all comfort, who comforts us in all our troubles, so that we can comfort those in any trouble with the comfort we ourselves receive from God.” (2 Corinthians 1:3)

SUPPORT FINANCIALLY

The Church of the Nazarene has been ministering in Syria for 100 years, especially reaching out to refugees and those in need (read this article for a brief history). We have the opportunity to partner with them in serving those in need. The initial response is focused on distributing food, providing needed supplies like blankets, and sheltering people whose homes were destroyed. To support the Church of the Nazarene’s response to the devastating earthquake in Syria, please donate now by giving to the Nazarene Compassionate Ministries Earthquake Crisis Fund: https://give.ncm.org/donate/140021

SEND CRISIS CARE KITS

Nazarene Compassionate Ministries provides quick help by having Crisis Care Kits ready to distribute in times of need. You can help by creating and donating Crisis Care Kits.

  • 1 Shampoo (12 to 18 oz.) tape flip top

  • 2 Bars of Soap (bath size or larger)

  • 1 Toothpaste (4.0 to 6.4 oz.)

  • 3 Toothbrushes (in original packaging)

  • 1 Box of Band-Aids (30 or more)

  • 1 Fingernail clipper (no toenail clipper)

  • 1 Sturdy hair comb for all hair types

  • 2 Hand towels

  • 4 Pocket-sized pkgs. facial tissue

  • 1 Beanie Baby-size stuffed toy

Each Crisis Care Kit (CCK) should contain only the items/quantities listed. $2 donation  per kit will pay shipping. (Donation for shipping can be placed in offering box)

Place all items into a 2-2.5-gallon zip-lock bag. You can drop your kit off in the room for compassionate ministry donations.

This list can also be found at www.stillnaz.com/crisis-care-kit

REMEMBER GOD’S PROMISES

When we are confronted with this kind of news, it can stir up the sadness and fear. Christians counter the fear of the unknown with what we do know. Here are some helpful verses that we can say aloud when we are afraid.

Proverbs 3:5–”Trust in the Lord with all your heart and lean not on your own understanding.”

Jeremiah 29:11, 13–”For I know the plans I have for you,” declares the Lord, “plans to prosper you and not to harm you, plans to give you hope and a future…You will seek me and find me when you seek me with all your heart.”

John 14:27–”Peace I leave with you; my peace I give you. I do not give to you as the world gives. Do not let your hearts be troubled and do not be afraid.”

Hebrews 13:5b–God has said, “Never will I leave you; never will I forsake you.”

PRAY

Cover the victims, their loved ones, the churches, the government, the aid workers in prayer.

If you don’t know what to pray, use the Psalms to pray. Consider Psalm 31, 46, & 55.

And if you need prayer, let us know at www.stillnaz.com/pray

“The Lord Almighty is with us” (Psalm 46:11)

“[Our] times are in [His] hands” (Psalm 31:15) so,

“Cast your cares on the Lord, and He will sustain you” (Psalm 55:22)

Grace and Peace,

Pastor Josh and the Stillmeadow Pastoral Team

Ash Wednesday (next week), IF:Gathering, New Groups

Dear Family of God,

Today’s reading (John 21:1-15) has one of my favorite Jesus quotes:

Come and have breakfast! (John 21:12)

Jesus is always hospitable and welcoming.

And the story surrounding this breakfast invitation is a powerful reminder. The disciples fished all night on their own strength and came up empty, but when they obeyed Jesus they came up abundantly.

So, today! Let us listen to the One who meets us after our weary nights, and let us obey Him and experience abundance and intimacy with Him.

Preparing for Lent, Membership Class

Dear Family of God,

“What is truth?”

In the final hours of Jesus we hear Pilate ask Jesus this question (John 18:38). And we see the Jewish leaders twist the truth to get rid of Jesus and we see Peter deny the truth to escape the pain of knowing Jesus. But Jesus does not hide, twist or deny the truth. Because He is “the way, the TRUTH, and the life” (John 14:6). And his “truth will set you free” (John 8:32).

A Prayer

Deception lies all around,

Blinding us to Your holy ground.

May our ears hear Your sound,

As we rest in being found.

A Blessing

“As you go about your day, may His truth guide you in what you think, how you process all that is happening, how you plan what is next. Truth is with you. And the truth will set you free.”

What a joy to have Pastor Jerry and Toni Porter share with us about how Jesus is the Way for the world! They also challenged us to join them in sharing the good news about Jesus through giving in Faith Promise.

In today’s reading, Jesus told the disciples that they’d face opposition in following Him. But listen to what He said:

“You do not belong to the world,

but I have chosen you out of the world.”

They were chosen out of the world not to escape the world but to be sent to the world.

Consider this as you go about your day: Jesus has chosen you and you belong to Him.

The Porters, Faith Promise, and IF!

Dear Stillmeadow Family!

This Sunday, February 6, Jerry and Toni Porter will tell us about their adventures in sharing the faith around the globe. It is a privilege to be a part of a global church family!

Pray about how you can financially join in!

As they come, pray about how to financially support the mission through Faith Promise giving. We encourage you to give above your regularly tithes to the global mission! Come Sunday to hear more!

(Oh yeah, the Porters are still going to preach in our “I Am” Series!)

Today’s reading in John 13, shows Jesus at his fullest, loving his disciples through washing their feet. And when Peter resisted, Jesus said:

“You do not realize now what I am doing,

but later you will understand.”

Following Jesus is the process of moving from “not realizing what God is doing” to “understanding.” And the process is in His timing, not ours.

Peter did not fully understand that the Way of the Messiah was the Way of the Servant. He hadn’t seen the crucifixion yet. But years after the resurrection, most assuredly under the influence of the love he received from the Servant Messiah that day, he wrote: “Love each other deeply, because love covers a multitude of sins. Offer hospitality to one another without grumbling. Each of you should use whatever gift you have received to serve others, as faithful stewards of God’s grace in its various forms” (1 Pet 4:8-10).

Let us serve like that, even though we do not fully understand what God is doing.

Stillmeadow Weekly — Abundant Life Challenge, Parents Night Out

Dear Stillmeadow Family!

(we’ve updated our website, and also switched the name of our weekly email from Welcome Wednesday to Stillmeadow Weekly…and this is the first Stillmeadow Weekly…now onto the news!)

In “The Way” E Stanley Jones said that faith in Jesus is not just something you hold, but something that holds you.

And that goes right with today’s reading in John 10 where Jesus says that his sheep cannot be snatched from his hand. His hold on you cannot be broken. Believers cannot be snatched from the loving hand of our saving shepherd.

So today, hold on in faith…He holds on to you. His grip is sure. Even when you're slipping or weary. He won't let go.
