Chili Cookoff, Night 2Gether, Child Dedication

Happy New Year Church Family,

The Lord is near to all who call on him…

This year I am reading through the Bible with one of my daughters. As I read Psalm 145, my heart was drawn to these three verses.

8 The Lord is gracious and compassionate,

slow to anger and rich in love.

9 The Lord is good to all;

he has compassion on all he has made.

18 The Lord is near to all who call on him,

to all who call on him in truth.

And then in my January “Lead with Prayer” Devotional on the Echo Prayer App, these three verses were the ones we were invited to reflect on. God was gifting me with a “double showing.” I need that reminder of his grace and compassion and goodness. And during this season, it is vital for me to remember that God is close to anyone who will call on him in truth.

Let God hear the voice of your heart today. When you call there is no “busy” signal. You won’t have to leave a voicemail. He is the God who hears. And as my devotional said: “Sometimes God answers prayer with miracles. But many times He answers prayer with the comfort found in His presence.”

Happy New Year Church Family,

Don’t stop praying

God is so cool. I love it when He uses multiple avenues to get my attention. For example, we’re in a series on prayer and Pastor Steve and Jade just preached about being persistent in prayer. And just two days before, Matthew West dropped a new song called, “Don’t Stop Praying.” Take a moment to listen and take a lifetime to learn the lesson.

https://youtu.be/bpbZqMJ-B44?si=jTQKg_GrJ_MYWykQ

I love this part of the song…

Don’t stop praying for the prodigal

Don’t stop praying for the miracle

Hallelujah, hallelujah and amen

Don’t stop praying that addictions end

Don’t stop praying for deliverance

Hallelujah, hallelujah and amen

Oh, don’t stop praying for the sickness healed

Don’t stop praying for His power revealed

Hallelujah, hallelujah and amen

No, don’t stop praying for the kingdom come

Don’t stop praying that his will be done

Hallelujah, hallelujah and amen

New Series, Pray for the EJAM Team & More

Happy New Year Church Family,

Meet Me In the Garden

In our first sermon series of 2024, we begin in the Garden with Jesus, where he poured out his heart and aligned His life with His Father in prayer. Commentators say that in the Garden of Eden, Adam said, “not your will but mine” but in the Garden of Gethsemane, Jesus said, “not my will but thine.”

In the milestone and mundane moments that you face this year, will you join Jesus in his prayer? Will you surrender your will to the will of the Father? If the Father is all loving and all good, don’t you want to?

  • As you move into a new neighborhood, school or job, pray, “not my will, but thine.”

  • As you bring a new child (biological or foster) into your home, pray, “not my will, but thine.”

  • As you join a small group or ministry, pray, “not my will, but thine.”

  • As you come to the end of an era, retirement or saying goodbye to a family member, pray, “not my will, but thine.”

Christmas Eve, Sabbath Sunday, Congrats to Pastor Jade & more!

Dear Church Family,

Here is today’s Advent Devotional written by Pat Eyler:

JOY

2    S A M U E L    6 :  1  - 1  1

When I was a young girl, I remember that many times as I would leave our home, my mother would say," Remember, you carry your dad's name." I knew what that meant and how important it was to honor my dad's name.

The Israelites were God's chosen people and they carried God's name. They also carried his presence in the Ark of the Covenant. He had given them specific instructions on how the ark was to be moved from place to place (Numbers 4:15, Numbers 7:9, Exodus 25:10-15). No matter how innocently it was done, touching the ark was in direct violation of God's law and was to result in death. This was a means of preserving the sense of God's holiness.

The Ark had been taken away from Israel and now David wanted to bring it back. It seemed the right thing to do, but David did things his own way rather than God's way. He might have been caught up in the excitement of planning to bring the ark back to Israel. Or maybe he just forgot what God had told Moses?

As the ark was being transported, the oxen pulling the cart stumbled, and a man named Uzzah took hold of the Ark. God struck Uzzah down, and he died. This was tragic, and David feared the Lord. That ended his plans for the Ark and his joyous rejoicing that day.

We may question how could such a thing happen. Uzzah was from a Levite family and should have known God's instructions. One thing we learned from this passage is God is holy, and it is important to honor his name and obey him.

Today, having Jesus in your heart is God's presence in your life. Do you know you have God's presence in your life? (1 John  5:13).

Christmas Eve Services, Sabbath Sunday and More!

Dear Church Family,

Here is today’s Advent Devotional written by Pastor Kathy Foltz:

PEACE

H A B A K K U K   2 :  1  -   5

In this passage, the prophet Habakkuk has been crying out for judgment against  his people because of their sins. God is using a sinful nation to judge a sinful nation. No nation is innocent in this matter. God tells the prophet that He is going to make things right in his  timing.

For us this is a lesson of living by faith. If God has not solved a problem then it is because it is not God’s time yet. Moreover, by faith we have to trust that He  has good reasons for delay. However, there is one thing that is true; He will cling to us and embrace us through any confusion in this world as we wait.

It at times seems impossible that we will ever see peace in our hostile world  today, but if we wait patiently in faith all things will be made new and perfect.  At this time of the year, we should remind ourselves why Jesus came down to earth as God with skin on. Jesus was the promise that by faith all things will be made right. There will be no complete peace until Jesus comes back to earth. He is the promise of true peace. The Prince of Peace!

“For the revelation awaits an appointed time It speaks of the end and will not prove false Though it linger, wait for it; It will certainly come and will not  delay.” —Habakkuk 2:3

Dear Church Family,

Here is the Advent Devotional for today by Chastity Frederick.

HOPE

H O S E A    6 :  1  - 6

The writings of the prophets are often a bit abrupt, hurling words of God’s coming judgment and calling for repentance. Hosea was such a prophet, calling for Israel’s repentance. We know that he married Gomer, an adulterous wife. And God even instructed Hosea to reconcile with her “though she is loved by another.” In the Scripture, we see this illustration being skillfully woven beside that of God’s love towards the Israelites.

As we enter today’s reading, we are drawn in - “Come. Let us return to the Lord,” Israel laments about their judgments, but suggests that God will heal, bandage, bless, and make new.

But there’s a plot twist, the Israelites were seeking a “quick fix” (I guess no one else has ever prayed one of those prayers?) Israel’s love was “like the early dew that disappears.” The Israelites were not interested in relationship with God, they were interested in relief from His judgment.

Hosea’s prophetic words in verse 6 pierce my soul, “I want mercy and not   sacrifice. I want you to recognize me as God instead of bringing me burnt offerings.” In Hebrew, mercy is translated as hesed - right living - love,  compassion, forgiveness. God’s “hesed” could not let Israel go and it won’t let you go either.

We can hold hope – confident expectation - that God is faithful. Just as He pursued the Israelites’ hearts and yours, He is pursuing the hearts of those around you.

Today, am I seeking a relationship with God or relief from God?

So thankful that Advent Experience is coming (and more)

Happy November Church Family!

Oh, what joy it is to ride and sing a saving song tonight. Heaven came down and glory filled the earth. That’s the theme of our advent series and that’s the song and story of the incarnation! God became like us so that we could become like Him. Yet, we live in the glorious in-between…the hope-filled and war-torn space between Jesus’ first arrival and his final arrival. One of the best ways to wait in that space is to practice gratitude, to say thanks for all the talents we have been given, for all the grace we have been shown. This week, what are you thankful for? Let me know at pastorjosh@stillnaz.com. My list is in the PS at the bottom!

The Family Advent Experience is Coming November 26

I’m thankful for what we’ll be doing this Sunday! The Advent season (Dec 3-24) is an incredible opportunity to prepare our hearts and lives for the second arrival of Jesus by remembering his first arrival! So, we have set aside the Sunday before Advent (Nov 26) as a special family advent experience to prepare our hearts and lives as a church family. This will be a worshipful and interactive all-generation service.

The Advent Devotional

And I’m thankful for the work of our people who helped write the Advent Devotional! It will be available on November 26. You can grab a hard copy and you can have it emailed to your inbox by subscribing on the button below.

“Just Mercy” has wrapped up!
I’m grateful for the way God moved in our most recent series, as Pastor Tabitha (at Stillmeadow Lane) and Pastor Isabell (at York City Campus) wrapped us up on Sunday.

I’m grateful for all the people who helped with the Thanksgiving Meal at our City Campus.

I’m grateful for all the people who have volunteered to help with Prison Ministries or Foster Care Ministries.

I’m grateful for all those who took ornaments to give to the Nursing Home Blessing!

I’m grateful for the $2605.51 given to Good News Prison Ministries and the $1511.61 given to Keystone Family Alliance.

I’m grateful for the $875 in gift cards given to Goode Elementary and $865 given to Sinking Springs and Roundtown (from our Welcome Bash!).

Advent Experience, Wrapping Up Just Mercy, and More

Wrapping up our “Just Mercy” Series
This Sunday we will be wrapping up our Just Mercy Series with a message by Pastor Tabitha at our Stillmeadow Lane Campus and our Thanksgiving Meal at our City Campus. We will also be introducing our “Christmas Blessing Tree” opportunity, which will be “Nursing Home Blessings.” We are planning on blessing our neighbors in nursing homes with gifts that they have requested. There will be gift tags on the trees in the lobby of both Stillmeadow Lane and City Campus. Grab a gift tag and lovingly wrap the gift and bring it back by December 10.

Here are the other Just Mercy opportunities

On November 5 we heard from Chaplain Michael Irvin from Good News Prison and Jail Ministry and how we can partner with him in his work at York County Prison.  Here are the four ways you can join in: stillnaz.com/prisonministry

On November 12 we heard from Nayler Abror from Keystone Family Alliance about how we can stand with foster kids and families. And here are the ways you can stand with foster kids and families: stillnaz.com/fostercare.

What has God been saying to you through the Just Mercy series?

I’d love to hear your thoughts (pastorjosh@stillnaz.com). My hope through this series is that your heart would be pierced for the needs of our community and your hands would be moved to act with Jesus on their behalf. I want to see “justice roll” in York County Prison, in the Foster Care System and in Nursing Homes too. That’s why we are exploring ways to share His mercy with people who have been imprisoned,  children in foster care and folks who are living in nursing homes.

Heavenly Father, would you light a fire for justice in the hearts of your people.

Crucified and Resurrected Christ, would you give us your sacrificial attitude to hold nothing back to serve like you do.

Holy Spirit, fill us with your compassion that we may act on the impulse of your love.

Let Justice Roll, 30 Hour Famine and Thanksgiving Dinner

Happy November Church Family!

“Let Justice Roll On Like A River”

That’s what God said. In Amos 5:24, he says, “Let justice roll on like a river, righteousness like a never-failing stream.” This month (which we’re calling Just Mercy Month), we’re jumping into the river and asking God to show us how to “let justice roll” in and through our lives as the people of Christ.

What does it look like for justice to roll on and righteousness too? I’d love to hear your thoughts (pastorjosh@stillnaz.com). When we surrender our lives to Jesus, we surrender to his justice and righteousness, so that our actions and our character match His. Justice and Righteousness looks like daily including those who are excluded, caring for those in our family that need special care, speaking up for someone at work who can’t speak for themselves, or sitting with someone in their suffering.

Preparing For Stand Sunday

Nursing Home Blessing

And on November 19, we will hear about the “Nursing Home Blessing,” a unique opportunity to care for the elderly and aging in our community.

30 Hour Famine and Thanksgiving Feast

And we will have two events that will be ways to live out God’s mercy. The youth will be doing the 30 Hour Famine on November 10-11 (that’s this weekend!) and our York City Campus will be participating in the annual community Thanksgiving Feast on November 19.

Will you join in prayer for this month?

Just Mercy Month, New Youth Pastor and more!

Happy November Church Family!

November is “Just Mercy” Month

As we turn towards the Advent Season that leads into the Christmas Season, we will take the first three Sundays of November to draw our hearts and minds to the prophetic words of Micah, Amos and Jesus. The theme that binds the texts together? Justice and Mercy.

As God’s people, we are called not just to know God in our hearts, but to show God with our actions. So, each week we will feature a different way to show God’s mercy and demonstrate His justice. God’s compassion goes to those who are often overlooked in our culture, so we are going to follow His lead and explore ways to share His mercy with people who have been imprisoned, children in foster care and folks who are living in nursing homes.

On November 5 we will hear from Chaplain Michael Irvin from Good News Prison and Jail Ministry and how we can partner with him in his work at York County Prison.

On November 12 (It’s Stand Sunday!) we will hear from Nayler Abror from Keystone Family Alliance about how we can stand with foster kids and families.

On November 19, we will hear about an opportunity to care for the elderly and aging in our community.

New Youth Pastor Update

A couple weeks ago we announced that Pastor Chris Fuller has received a call to prison chaplain ministry in Loretto, PA. His departure means a transition in our youth and young adult ministry. And here's what's cool. While God was preparing Chris to chaplain ministry, He was also calling someone in our own church to youth ministry.

This person has a contagious passion for Jesus and a love for people. She is an incredible communicator and highly relational and an incredible team builder.  She has been serving as our Adult Discipleship Pastor and has already been volunteering in youth ministry.  In both of those she has shown that she has the character and competency to lead our youth ministries into the next season of growth.

I am pleased to announce that Pastor Tabitha Martin will be serving as our Youth and Adult Discipleship Pastor. She is currently finishing up her service as middle school Bible teacher at CSY. While she finishes up at CSY, she will be part-time youth pastor and the adult discipleship ministries with Wayne Rumsey will carry those duties. But when she comes on full-time in December, she will serve as Youth and Adult Discipleship Pastor, providing leadership for spiritual formation for youth into adulthood. I believe that she and Pastor Rachel are going to be an incredible partnership in family ministries.

Join me in prayer for Chris and Emily in their transition. Their final day with us is this Sunday, November 5, which when Tabitha will begin as youth pastor! Also, join me in prayer for Tabitha and Jon and their children as their family navigates this exciting transition.

This whole weekend is a family oriented weekend! First, we have our Trunk or Treat from 2-4 on Saturday. Second, we have our York City Campus Fall Fest from 6-8 that same day. (You can still sign up to help at the links below.) Then we have family services, where children and youth will be included in our worship times. Join me in this prayer over the weekend:

Heavenly Father, thank you for making us family. Brother Jesus, help us love each other as you have loved us. Holy Spirit, draw people of all generations to the Father and Son through Trunk or Treat, Fall Fest and family worship.

New Family Space! On the main campus, we will have a family space with a children’s ministry worker set up in the multi-purpose room for families of kids who might need a little bit more space or activity during the service.

The Question for The Final Sunday of our Series (Oct 29) and the Following Week:

Each week during our “All Church Series” on “How Not To Be The Church” we have one question for all of us to wrestle with. From October 1-29, we will align our hearts around Jesus’ words in Matthew 21-22 and allowing His words to shape our imaginations. (Pastor John, Pastor Chris, Pastor Jade and Chastity and Pastor Rachel will all be preaching throughout this series, and I’m pumped)

  • What is one thing we can do in faith to decrease hate and increase love within our homes and church?

Wrestle with this in your small group, in your home or with your friends. And if you’d like, send me an email with your thoughts (pastorjosh@stillnaz.com).

Do You Have Nominations For Church Elections?

On Sunday December 10, we will have our annual church board elections. Each Nazarene church is directed "to elect as church officers active members of the local church who profess the experience of entire sanctification and whose lives bear public witness to the grace of God that calls us to a holy life; who are in harmony with the doctrines, polity, and practices of the Church of the Nazarene; and who support the local church faithfully in attendance, active service, and with tithes and offerings. Church officers should be fully engaged in “making Christlike disciples in the nations.”"  (For the rest of the manual statement) Stillmeadow board members serve three year terms. You can see our current leaders here.

If you have nominations, you may submit them on this form by October 16th. Our nomination committee will review the nominees and then contact them to see if they will allow their name to run for election.

Letter to the Church in York

Dear friends, this letter was shared with our people during our worship services on both campuses on September 24, 2023.

To all in York, “who are loved by God and called to be his holy people: Grace and peace to you from God our Father and from the Lord Jesus Christ.” (Rom 1:7)

This is Joshua Adam Kleinfeld, son of Rolf and Debbie, husband to Aubrey and father of Cadence, Eden and Jayne, pastor to Stillmeadow, but before all of those, a child of God and “servant of Christ Jesus and set apart for the good news of God” (Rom 1:1). I write this letter as the conclusion to our series in the letter that the apostle Paul wrote to the early church in Rome.

Paul hadn’t been to the house church in Rome, but longed to be with them so that he could “impart to [them] some spiritual gift to make [them] strong” (1:11). But the letter that he sent was a spiritual gift that not only made them strong, but has strengthened the church through the ages. That is my hope for this letter. That God would use it to strengthen your faith and our church for His glory and the good of our world.

“I thank my God through Jesus Christ for each one of you.” (Rom 1:8) While the early church in Rome was made up of Gentiles and Jews, the church of York is young and old, wealthy and not-so-wealthy, urban and suburban and rural, American and immigrant, those born in York and others moved to York. And what I love is that the good news of Jesus is for every single one of you. I can’t get over (and I don’t want to) the good news. The good news is strong, simple and inclusive. It “is the power of God that brings salvation to everyone who believes!” (1:16) All we have to do is put our faith in Jesus. Anybody can believe! “Everyone who calls on the name of the Lord will be saved!” (Rom 10:13)

But, it breaks my heart that there are people outside the church who do not know the good news of Jesus Christ and that there are people inside the church who are living like they do not know the good news either! Look around York and even inside our own church community and homes and you can see the sad effects of sin.

There are the obvious sins like: murder, theft, abuse of family members or coworkers or classmates, cheating on spouses, racism, abandonment, sexual immorality, bullying, lying to cover things up, cheating on tests, violence, slavery. Some of these are socially acceptable, but all of them weaken our relationships, thus weakening our community. And there are less obvious sins like: gossip, lack of hospitality, complaining, complacency, worry, gambling, laziness, compassion-less living, keeping your gifts to yourself, ignoring of the younger and older generations, judgmentalism (i.e. looking down on people of other cultures or from different parts of the city or county), hoarding, gluttony. Many of these are socially acceptable, but all of them weaken our character and erode the foundation of our community. And then there are the religious sins like: claiming to be a Christian but not acting like Jesus, saying you believe in Jesus but not obeying His commands, or getting busy working for God but missing out on working with God, or worse, treating non-believers or other believers who have different opinions with contempt instead of compassion. All of these are the result of trying to live without God or trying to be God, valuing your own ideas and your own desires above God’s ideas and desires.

This, my brothers and sisters, is sin. Sin promises strength, but brings weakness. Sin promises relief, but brings restriction. Sin promises freedom, but brings slavery.  Sin promises life, but brings death. “The wages of sin is death” (5:23)

I will paraphrase Paul in Romans 7: “Who will rescue us from this world that is subject to death?”

We cannot rescue ourselves. So, who will rescue us? Will it be the local or national government? No!

Who will rescue us? Will it be the money in our bank account? No!

Who will rescue us? Will it be our popularity or performance? No!

Who will rescue us? Will it be our good deeds? No!

Who will rescue us? Will it be our drug of choice (whether it’s marijuana, pornography, cigarettes, alcohol or food)? No!

Paul answered his own question for us: It is “God, who delivers us through Jesus Christ our Lord.” (7:25)

Despite our sin, despite our rejection of Him, despite our ruining of His good world, despite the harm we have done to ourselves and to others, God offers deliverance to every single person through Jesus Christ. How? Paul says it this way: “God presented Christ as a sacrifice of atonement, through the shedding of his blood.” (3:25) In today’s society, we no longer have the Jewish sacrificial system of worship. But when you read the Old Testament you’ll see that the sacrifice of atonement was a big deal to God and the Jewish people. Originally it was an animal that was offered as a symbolic sacrifice for the people of God to receive forgiveness from God for their sins and as a way to renew their relationship with God. But Paul and the New Testament writers realized that what happened through Jesus’ death on the cross was a new sacrifice of atonement. Paul says, “[Jesus] was delivered over to death for our sins” (4:25).

This still blows my mind. Why did Jesus die? “For our sins?” Yes. Remember, “The wages of sin is death”? The price for sin is death. And Jesus paid that price for us. Jesus took the wages that we earned.

But why would he pay the price for us? Because God loves us. He loves us so much. Not because we earned his love or had proven our own worth. No, check this out. Put these verses in your heart: “You see, at just the right time, when we were still powerless, Christ died for the ungodly. Very rarely will anyone die for a righteous person, though for a good person someone might possibly dare to die. But God demonstrates his own love for us in this: While we were still sinners, Christ died for us.” (5:6-8)

So why did Jesus die? Because God loves us and because he wanted to deliver us from the wages of sin. And if you’ve paid attention to the story of Jesus, you know Jesus did not stay dead. He rose from the grave. Our gospel is the gospel of the cross and the empty tomb. “For we know that since Christ was raised from the dead, he cannot die again; death no longer has mastery over him. The death he died, he died to sin once for all, but the life he lives, he lives to God.” (6:9-10)

What does this tell us about God and sin and death? God takes sin and death so seriously that he dealt a deathblow to them.

“Jesus was delivered over to death for our sins and was raised to life for our justification.” Sin and death want to ruin us, but God wants to rebuild us. That’s what justification is: it is a restoring of relationship with Him and a making right of our hearts and our wants and our everything. Jesus was raised from the dead so that we could be restored and live with resurrection power every single day.

But, get this: Jesus died for us before we could ask for it, but he does not deliver us without us asking for it. He does not force his rescue on anyone. He has broken the power of sin and death, but he respects human dignity to give us the option to choose. We can live under His power. Or we can live under the power of sin and death.

I must admit, sometimes I am overwhelmed when I think about those living under the power of sin and death. My heart aches for people dying of overdose, families divided by divorce, children abandoned because of addiction, entire communities and countries disrupted because of corrupt governments, parents who were abused as kids who then abuse their own kids, people being seduced into slavery, babies being discarded before being born, people with less cognitive or emotional abilities being mistreated or cast off, children running away, school shootings, murder-suicides, food shortages around the globe.

These things sometimes make me wonder about the goodness of God. But then I think about this: Jesus’ suffering on the cross means that God understands our suffering. He gets us. God does not love from a distance, but up close and personal.

Our world needs to know that rescue and peace are available in Jesus Christ. That’s why our mission statement is “Jesus to All Generations.” Every person, of every age, in every race, needs to know the freedom and mercy available in Jesus Christ!

So our first practice is “Proclaim Jesus.” Paul quotes the Old Testament when he says, “How beautiful are the feet of those who bring the good news.” He himself experienced the beautiful feet of Stephen who died sharing the story of Jesus. He himself experienced the beautiful feet of Ananias who prayed over him when he was blind. We want to be like Stephen and Ananias, sharing the good news of Jesus with our words and actions even if it costs us our reputation or life.

Our second practice is “Pray Relentlessly.” It’s been blowing my mind to think that Jesus is praying for us right now. Jesus is talking to His Father on our behalf. So when we pray, we’re joining Jesus in His prayers. Even our private prayers are “prayer meetings” because the Holy Spirit within us is interceding for us! Let’s be the kind of church who joins Jesus in His prayers and who join in each other’s struggles by praying for each other.

Our third practice is “Cultivate Growth.” When we put our faith in Jesus Christ we begin a journey of obedience. The Christian is never done “growing up” in Christ. But growth doesn’t happen on accident. It must be an intentional, daily decision. Romans 12:2 illustrates perfectly this process: “Do not conform to the pattern of this world but be transformed by the renewing of your mind.”

Our fourth practice is “Embrace Unity.” In a world that struggles with division and loneliness, we have been given a Christian family that crosses age and ethnic boundaries. Jesus did not start a group just for Jews, or just for Gentiles, or just for the young or just for the old. He started a multi-cultural, multi-generational, multi-lingual movement. Let’s be the kind of church who does the hard work necessary to “live in harmony with one another” (Rom 12:16).

Our fifth practice is “Equip Servants.” We believe that all of us are called to proclaim Jesus, pray relentlessly, cultivate growth and embrace unity. Each one of us is a servant of the gospel, serving each other and serving the world. And what’s really cool is that “we have different gifts, according to the grace given to each of us” (Rom 12:6). So, you will proclaim Jesus and embrace unity differently than I will, but all of us have been gifted to do it! So, let’s be the kind of church family that spurs each other on to play our part.

Finally, our sixth practice is “Love Sacrificially.” We do not come together to be entertained or to provide entertainment for others. We come together to receive God’s love and extend God’s love. As God demonstrated his love for us, we want to demonstrate His love to the world. As God gave what was most precious to Him, let us be the kind of people who hold nothing back in our service to each other and the world.

Truth be told, our mission and our core practices are all about love. Loving God and loving others. When we encourage you to use the Personal Growth Plan, it is nothing more and nothing less than an invitation to be intentional about growing in love. And Paul puts it plainly when he says in Romans 13:8, “Let no debt remain, except the debt to love one another.”

When you spend time daily with God in reading the Bible and in prayer, it not only develops your relationship with God, but God also uses that time to transform you into the kind of person who shares His love with others. Paul says that the words of the Old Testament were written to teach us endurance and to encourage us. And when we spend time with God in the word, He uses it to strengthen our souls and renew our minds so that we slowly but surely become the kind of people who live out His word wherever we go.

And when you worship God with us on Sunday mornings, or commit to being in a small group, or serve with us in a ministry, or give your tithes and offerings…each one of those steps is a step towards Christ-likeness and an opportunity to express His love.

Family, I’m praying for an awakening in our church. I’m praying for each one of you to experience the fire of God within you. I’m praying that each one of you experience intimacy with Jesus. I’m praying that each of you are filled with passion for His word and His work.

In our next series, which we’re calling, “How Not To Be The Church” we are going to highlight 5 habits or attitudes that must die within us in order for an awakening to occur. We do not know when Jesus is coming back. But we do know that “each one of us will have to give an account of ourselves before God” (Rom 14:12) and we want to be ready for that. And one way to be ready for that is to ask God to help us uproot the attitudes and habits that are contrary to His way. As we do, I believe we make room for an awakening. Here are the five attitudes and habits that we’ll be focusing on: Unrepentant, Fruitlessness, Inattentiveness, Hypocrisy and Unlove.

Will you pray with me for this? Will you join me in my struggle? I desire that we be a church that is strong in faith, quick to obey, ready to share at all times. But I know that we have some growing to do. This means that we must humbly hear what God has to say to us. We must be ready to receive His correction and His direction. Many people start fast in the faith and fall off, but faith is a long-distance run, not a sprint. If we’re going to be a community that lives “Jesus to All Generations” it will take all of us, and it will take time.

I thank God for each of you. But there are some among you that I’d like to personally and publicly thank. Would you join me in thanking them? Next time you see them, give them a holy high five. Paul said to greet each other with a holy kiss, but we’ll leave that for the early church.

Greet Pastor Jade and Chastity and Pastor Isabell and Casey for their incredible work with the York City Campus.

Greet Pastor Kent and our incredible facilities team.

Thank Pastor Tabitha and Wayne and the Nazarene Discipleship International leaders and the NOMA and Small Group Leaders.

Thank Jessica and our childcare center crew.

Thank Erma and Suzette and Sue and Brad and Nancy and Emily and Lindsay and Jenn who lead various ministries to serve our community and the world.

Greet Roxanne and the Celebrate Recovery crew.

And how about JoAnn and Randy and Herb and Lonna and all those serving in our East Jamaica partnership?

And Pastor Kathy and Mark and Pastor Ronnie and the women and men who help with visitation and with our funerals.

And how about Pastor Rachel and Pastor Chris and Trudy and Patsy and Natalie and all the family ministries crew from children’s workers to youth workers?

And Scott and the board. Thanks!

And Pastor John and Seth and the worship and tech team. Thanks!

And Kimber and Lisa and Raymond and Brad for your leadership of the cafe, usher and greeter crew!

And Pat Eyler and the ladies who make prayer shawls. And the groundskeepers (Greg and Dave) and chairstackers.

And the office ladies, Karon, Patsy and Esther…you make it happen! And to all who have served in some way. Each one of you is evidence of the good news.

Greet each other with a holy high five and a hug and a thank you!

Now, I conclude with Paul’s final blessing in Romans 16.

25 Now to him who is able to establish you in accordance with my gospel, the message I proclaim about Jesus Christ, in keeping with the revelation of the mystery hidden for long ages past, 26 but now revealed and made known through the prophetic writings by the command of the eternal God, so that all the Gentiles might come to the obedience that comes from[f] faith— 27 to the only wise God be glory forever through Jesus Christ! Amen.

Our Next All Church Series Begins Oct 1, and more!

Hello Church Fam,

One of the ways that we “embrace unity” as a church is to have an “all church series” when we invite kids, youth and adult ministries across both campuses to focus on the same set of scriptures in the same period of time. These can be catalyzing experiences in the life of the church, moments that allow us space to keep in step with the Spirit together.

From October 1-29, we want to align our spirits and hearts around Jesus’ words in Matthew 21-22. Pastor John, Pastor Chris, Pastor Jade and Chastity and Pastor Rachel will all be preaching throughout this series.

I want to challenge you to…

  1. Make every effort to come every Sunday.

  2. Jump into a discipleship group to wrestle with the question of the week.

  3. Do the daily readings.

  4. Pray the daily prayers.

If you aren’t in a group: sign up here.

If you’d like to follow the daily readings and prayers: grab a guide at the welcome desk or download them here.

How Not To Be The Church

A brief look at Matthew 21-22 and you’ll see that Jesus was confronting the religious establishment of his day, providing correction in love, inviting them and us to leave behind unrepentant, fruitless, inattentive, hypocritical and unloving lives. So, we’re titling this series: “How Not To Be The Church.” What Jesus confronted then, he wants to cleanse today.

I’m praying that this will be a purifying time for our church, as we allow the Holy Spirit to reveal the areas of our lives that are resistant to His work and His way, so that we can Be the Church and Serve the World as He has destined us to be and do. I’m praying with hope-filled anticipation that God will deepen our dependence on Him and interdependence on each other through this series.

Will you pray for me and each other in this?

Youth Ministry Announcement, Chicken Dinner and more

Dear Family of God,

Would you pray with us through the transition?

On Tuesday night, Pastor Chris shared with the youth ministry family that God has called him to serve as a prison chaplain in Loretto, PA. This means that we are moving into a transition season as we wrap up Chris’ time of service with us and prepare for what’s next in youth and young adult ministry. We are so grateful for the last four years we have shared with Pastor Chris and Emily. And we believe that God is going to use this transition to strengthen our youth and young adult ministry. Just as God called Chris to take this next step, He is preparing our youth and young adult ministry for their next step. So, please pray with me as we begin to plan the best path forward for this transition.

Read more about the transition here.

Let’s pray for “endurance and encouragement” through this transition so that we can live into this blessing from Paul in Romans 15:5.

“May the God who gives endurance and encouragement give you the same attitude of mind toward each other that Christ Jesus had, so that with one mind and one voice you may glorify the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ.” (Romans 15:5)

Living out real love in groups, ministries, prayers and generosity

Dear Family of God,

On Sunday we began to explore Paul’s call to “Love unhypocritically” in Romans 12:9. The NIV translates it “Love must be sincere.” And it seems that the rest of the letter to Romans is unpacking what it means to love in a real way in the real community of believers and the real neighborhood of the world.

I’ve heard it said that the family is like a laboratory for the maturing of children and parents alike. Could it be that the church is a kind of “real love laboratory”? The church is the place and people in which God is renewing our thinking, transforming our character, strengthening our will to show love to all people in all things at all times.

This is why each one of us matters. “We have different gifts, according to the grace given to each of us” (Romans 12:6). And those gifts are meant to be used in small groups, in ministry, in regular prayer and in faithful generosity. Sometimes these things are easy to join in and stick with, and other times these things require determination. So, let Paul’s blessing in Romans 15:5 be an encouragement as you consider how you will live out God’s love this fall in a small group, ministry team, dedication to prayer and in giving. The rest of the email gives opportunities for you to join in.

“May the God who gives endurance and encouragement give you the same attitude of mind toward each other that Christ Jesus had, so that with one mind and one voice you may glorify the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ.” (Romans 15:5)
