Pray for NYC, Prep for Rise Against Hunger
Dear Church,
This Sunday we began a new series out of Romans, especially focusing on the “good news!”
When I went to Nazarene Youth Conference in 1999, God met me and transformed me and set me on His path. I am still living out what He called me to in Toronto my senior summer. I wonder what He’s going to do with this generation of NYC youth. Will you pray with me for our youth and all the youth going to NYC23 in Tampa next week? We’ll be having a special prayer time this Sunday (July 2).
Last year we packed over 10,000 meals for Rise Against Hunger. And we’re going to do it again this year on July 30.

Believe who Jesus is, Foster Care Initiative, and more
Dear Church,
What an incredible week of VBS and Mission Week it has been. Thank you to all who have served and invited! Our theme on the second night of VBS was “Believe who Jesus is” which fits perfectly with this first part of our Sunday series in Romans!
When Paul started his letter, he was sure to point out the central role of “faith” (i.e. believing in Jesus) in the church. He said: '“For in the gospel the righteousness of God is revealed — a righteousness that is by faith from first to last, just as it is written: ‘The righteous will live by faith.’” (Romans 1:17)
Yes, God is calling us to a trusting relationship with Him. He is not giving us a new set of rules to live by. That’s why Paul said: “For we maintain that a person is justified by faith apart from the works of the law.” (Romans 3:28)
This is “the message concerning faith that we proclaim: if you declare with your mouth, ‘Jesus is Lord,’ and believe in your heart that God raised him from the dead, you will be saved. For it is with your heart that you believe and are justified, and it with your mouth that you profess your faith and are saved.” (Romans 10:8-10)
Do you believe? Do you believe that God conquered death, that God is greater than sin, that God is the just judge and that Jesus is the only One who can save us? That belief changes our present and our future. I encourage you, if you haven’t declared out loud, to say a prayer today saying, “Jesus is Lord” over all of your life. And then tell somebody about it! (my email is pastorjosh@stillnaz.com if you want to tell me!)

General Assembly Update, Prayers for VBS and Mission Week
Dear church,
What an incredible privilege to be a part of a church family that literally spans the globe. I have been at our General Assembly (happens every four years!) in Indianapolis. I wish each of you could be here, but here’s a quick summary with links to the services.
On Friday night of General Assembly we saw flags from every nation where the Church of the Nazarene serves.
On Saturday night, we heard from General Superintendent Gustavo Crocker (who ordained Pastor’s Chris, Rachel, and Ronnie) about how all of us are called.
And Sunday morning's message from General Superintendent David Graves included an incredible image of how God lavishes his love on us and demonstrated his love for us in Jesus Christ. Right in the middle of the message was the memory verse for our current series!
Sunday evening’s message from General Superintendent Davis Busic is iconic. He got to the heart of the Nazarene story of risk-taking love and holy living.
On Monday morning, General Superintendent Carla Sunberg (who ordained Pastor Jade) gave the quadrennial address (state of the union), with the winsome tag-line: "Good Morning." If you want a glimpse of God's incredible work in the global Nazarene church, take the time to listen in.
And Monday evening, General Superintendent Fili Chambo asked “What does it mean to say ‘Jesus is Lord’ in the chaos?” He invited us to remember that the chaos in the world does not have the final word, because Jesus is Lord.
You can view all the services here.

06.08 Pray for General Assembly and Stillnaz Summer
Dear Church,
This Sunday we began a new series out of Romans, especially focusing on the “good news!” Our memory verse for this part of our series is Romans 5:8. Notice that Paul uses the “active” tense when he says, “God demonstrates.” For Paul, God’s love is an active force for us. Ponder on that as you memorize this verse.
But God demonstrates his own love for us in this: While we were still sinners, Christ died for us. (Romans 5:8)
Pray for General Assembly
Tomorrow, June 9, the Nazarene General Assembly begins. It is an incredible privilege to be a part of a denomination sharing God’s life-changing news across the globe. As the delegates gather in Indianapolis, let us pray Jesus’ prayer in John 17 over them, asking God that “they may be brought to complete unity…so that the world will know that [God the Father] sent [Jesus] and have loved them even as [God the Father has loved Jesus].”

Our Summer Series and Plans
Dear Church,
This Sunday we will begin a new series: God for us.
Romans 5:8 says, “But God demonstrates his own love for us in this: While we were still sinners, Christ died for us.” This gets at the heart of God’s heart. Before we could move an inch towards him, he made the move towards us, to reconcile, rebuild, restore, resurrect us. Our 2023 Summer Series is going through the letter Paul wrote to the Romans, in which he carefully explains the “for us” nature of God’s love.
And how do we receive this God? How do we participate in this love? We believe. “For in the gospel the righteousness of God is revealed — a righteousness that is by faith from first to last, just as it is written: “the righteous will live by faith.” (Romans 1:17)
As we enter this new series, you are invited to read through Romans yourself. Download the reading plan here.
And as we enter this new series, let us join our hearts in concentrated prayer for York City and County. Our neighbors need to know the good news that God is for us. As we pray for our neighbors, God moves our hearts and lives to demonstrate His love. We have a prayer plan at www.stillnaz.com/pray.

Our Summer Intern, A Surprise Guest for Grad Sunday and Camps!
Dear Church,
On Sunday, we drew our 1 Peter series to a close! I am looking forward to our Summer Series (This is the Gospel) that starts on June 4.
I have loved this encouragement to “Grow Up” from 1 Peter. And I love that Stillmeadow has a legacy of helping young people “grow up” through our internships. These have been rich opportunities to grow with someone as they explore God’s call on their lives.
And in this season of graduations, it’s a reminder of how we as a congregation walk beside young people and parents as they “grow up” through the educational journey.
And as we enter the season of summer camps, we have the opportunity to help teens and kids “grow up” through sacred encounters with God and his people from across our Nazarene district.
Check out how you can be involved in each of these opportunities below…

Dear Church,
As we continue through the first letter that Peter wrote to the early church, I’m curious what themes God is bringing to your attention or what actions He is calling you to do? I’d love to hear. Share with me here: pastorjosh@stillnaz.com.
God keeps bringing to my attention the “exile” theme, where Peter recognizes that the people who have been “called out of darkness into His wonderful light” (2:9) are “foreigners and exiles” (2:11) in this world. But I am challenged that Peter calls these “exiles” not to live opposed to people in the world, but to live as good neighbors and “show proper respect to everyone, love the family of believers, fear God, honor the emperor” (2:17).
God, help us live without fear of others, and live with reverence for Your Son.
Jesus, thank You for giving us an example of living with love in the face of hate and for giving your life “to bring [us] to God” (3:18).
Spirit, keep before us your eternal goodness and strengthen us to “continue to do good” (4:19).
We are passionate about helping people of all ages experience being called out of darkness into God’s wonderful light, and especially creating environments for our young people to hear God’s voice and follow His Call. Facilities Manager, Graduates and VBS!
Dear Church,
“Love one another deeply, from the heart.” (1 Peter 1:22) Peter’s encouragement is to do more than give lip service to the three words (I love you) that are said too much and maybe not enough.
In our current series about growing up in our salvation, this is a point we dare not miss: Growth in Christ is always growth in love. Each of the steps of the journey of growth is about receiving His love and becoming more like Him to show His love.
Two ways we want to grow in love together as a congregation are in the hiring of a new facilities manager and in celebrating our graduates.
Now Hiring Facilities Team Manager
We’re looking for someone who has a vision to care for the building resources that have been entrusted to us. Duties include: supervising the custodial staff, with custodial duties as a part of the hours, overseeing the scheduling and usage of our facilities, and purchasing supplies. For more details and an opportunity to serve in this way, contact Pastor Kent at pastorkent@stillnaz.com or 717-577-4246.

Celebrations, Men’s Conference, and VBS!
Dear Church,
I love how Peter begins his letter.
To God’s elect, exiles scattered throughout the provinces of Pontus, Galatia, Cappadocia, Asia and Bithynia, 2 who have been chosen according to the foreknowledge of God the Father, through the sanctifying work of the Spirit, to be obedient to Jesus Christ and sprinkled with his blood: Grace and peace be yours in abundance!
This is a trinitarian’s dream (the Father, Son and Spirit all are mentioned!)! But even more, it reminds us that as Christians we have been chosen and are being sanctified to be obedient to Jesus. In other words, we’ve been hand selected and set aside for God’s holy work in this world!
What we do as a church is an act of obedience to Jesus. Three ways that we have been called to obey is 1) our partnership with the childcare, 2) setting aside time to cultivate growth through events like the Men’s Conference, and 3) honoring and encouraging church family members at significant life milestone events like graduation.
50 Year Anniversary of Partnership
This Sunday, May 7, we will be celebrating the 50 year partnership in our morning services. Many childcare families and employees attend Stillmeadow, and we will be welcoming all childcare families and employees that morning! We will have a special presentation and time of prayer. We are even going to have some of the current kiddos share a “chapel song!” Join me in praying for the partners and families.
Men’s Conference is this Saturday
If you haven’t registered, do so HERE. And if you’re not able to come, pray for those who are attending, that this will be a sacred time where old commitments can be renewed and new commitments to Christ can be made.

Celebrating 50 Years of Partnership, Men’s Conference, Chicken BBQ
Dear Church,
In my 20 years at Stillmeadow we have gone through three mission statements. We had “more disciples, better disciples” and then we had “continuing Jesus’ mission” and now we have “Jesus to All Generations” (#JTAG). Each statement is a different expression of the same thing: we want to follow Jesus as His disciples and share His life-transforming truth with all people. One way that we have been living this out is in our partnership with the Stillmeadow Childcare.

Let’s Grow Up in Our Prayers
In our current sermon series we have been challenged to dwell in 1 Peter. I was challenged by the NLT translation of 1 Peter 4:7: “The end of the world is coming soon. Therefore, be earnest and disciplined in your prayers.” Let us be fervent and focused in our prayers for our partnership with the childcare. Let us be passionate and purposeful in our prayers for our families and church family. Let us be intense and intentional in our prayers for our community and country.

Grow by reading 1 Peter, Congratulations, & 2 Fundraisers!
Dear Church,
While Ray Stark and Chastity Frederick kicked off our TTGU (Time to Grow Up) series in York, a delegation of Stillmeadow Nazarenes were worshiping with sisters and brothers from across the Mid-Atlantic District. What an encouraging time! God is stirring in his people!
Grow by Reading 1 Peter
In York, we were challenged to read through 1 Peter during this series. I am reading it in the New Living Translation this week and was struck by 2:24 where it says “He personally carried our sins in his body on the cross so that we can be dead to sin and live for what is right.” What about you? Feel free to text (717-577-6446) or email (pastorjosh@stillnaz.com) your thoughts on what you’re learning. And, even better, share it with your small group or family!
Congratulations!
In Maryland, Ronnie Vandervort and Chris Fuller both received their ordination credentials from the Church of the Nazarene on Sunday night. We are so grateful to both of them for their ministry and proud of them for their efforts in reaching this level of leadership within our denomination. You can view their ordination service here.

It’s Time To Grow Up, Praying til Pentecost, 2 Fundraisers!
Dear Church,
What a joy it was to celebrate Resurrection together with three baptisms on Sunday! And I’m thrilled that we’re moving into a new series in 1 Peter called “It’s Time to Grow Up!”
It’s time to grow up in the salvation that comes from Jesus’ resurrection. It’s time to live like Jesus is alive in our homes and in our church. But what does that look like? Well, we want to unpack seven different “steps” that Peter gives to the church to grow up in the gift that God has given us in Christ.

Accepting applications for the position of Facilities Manager
This is an opportunity for someone who sees this as an area of ministry. The duties include: supervising the custodial staff, with custodial duties as a part of the hours, overseeing the scheduling and usage of our facilities, and purchasing supplies. The position is mostly second shift and weekends due to the nature of our church activities.

PS Are you going to join the half-million prayers? Last week our prayer week was incredible. Let’s keep the spiritual momentum going by praying with Nazarenes across our nation. Follow the prayer guide at www.halfmillionmobilization.org.
You’re Still Invited to Invite (to Easter, Chicken BBQ, Touch a Truck & More)
Dear Church,
The first nights of our Prayer Week have been incredible. I do hope that you’ll join us in tonight’s Maundy Thursday Service or tomorrow night’s Good Friday Service. Both services will be at our York City Campus.
Who are you inviting?
As you think about Easter Sunday, we invite you to pray about who you can invite to join you in worship and/or at your table? Resurrection Sunday is a perfect day to welcome new and old friends into our church community and the best approach is personal invitation. Ask God who that person could be and reach out to them to join you.
As you seek God on that, be encouraged and challenged by today’s Lenten Reflection from Tara Strauser.
Psalm 116:1-2, 12-19
“PSALM 116 ( I LOVE YOU LORD)” by Mission House
“NOW MY LIFESONG SINGS” by Casting Crowns
This psalm speaks to my heart as one rescued from death. Like the psalmist, I am overcome with deep appreciation and love of my Lord for His attention and care. “What shall I return to the Lord for all His goodness to me?” By His grace and never-ending love for us, we have been saved. And I am so very grateful!
Like the psalmist, I too “will lift the cup of salvation and call on the Name of the Lord.” I, too, devote my life to Him and His will.
The song titled Psalm 116 (I Love You, Lord) exclaims:
I love You, Lord, for you have delivered my soul from death, my feet from stumbling.
I will walk in the land of the living.
Therefore, my soul will sing in praise to the Lord. As the line in the song, "And Now My Lifesong Sings", goes, “Now my life to You I give. Hallelujah… Let my lifesong sing to You”.
Can you relate with the psalmist’s gratitude and love to God? Have you fully devoted your life to Him? May I encourage you to read these verses again, spending time with Jesus in prayer? He’s patiently waiting for you.

You’re Invited to Invite (to Easter, Easter Surprise & More)
Dear Church,
We have just over one week left before Easter, which means we have almost completed our 2023 Lenten Journey.
As you seek God on that, be encouraged and challenged by today’s Lenten Reflection from Brian Meyers, Jr.
Psalm 31:9-18
In this passage, David had his moments of doubt and depression, but he always turned to the Lord in complete trust. He understood that without God he could not win even the smallest battle against his enemies. He knew that God was leading him and he was content to allow God to direct his steps. God was his life, so he sought to follow the will of God in all he did.
Too many of us today seem to think that trusting God means we live our own lives with no recognition of Him whatsoever until we get in trouble and it is only then that we turn to Him and ask for His help. We cannot put ourselves ahead of God, our will ahead of His, or our thinking ahead of His and expect Him to protect us.
As we put our trust in Him, we seek to know Him more by spending time in His word and talking with Him in prayer. We allow His Spirit to live in us and control us as we become more like Christ each day.
What is one area in your life that you are putting ahead of God instead of trusting Him to direct your steps?

Count on God, Easter Surprise, Prayer Week
Dear Church,
We’re now over halfway through our journey through Lent, the 40 days between Ash Wednesday and Easter Sunday, when we draw near to God through remembering Jesus’ journey to the cross and resurrection. As part of our journey we have collected devotional reflections from various saints from Stillmeadow. Here is today’s Lenten Reflection from Christine Deibert.
“AS THE DEER”~ by Steffany Gretzinger
I feel that I need to start by saying how amazing God is, how He always meets me where I am. Recently I have been dealing with multiple family issues. All of them are out of my control. I have told God (in one of our many conversations) that my life is His. I have had to hand things back to Him regularly. There are two sentences in the passage I chose to reflect on that scream out to me: "I am counting on the Lord...I long for the Lord." My desire for knowledge, my quest to get closer and closer to Him, is a real thirst.
Where is your focus during this season in your life? Who are you counting on and longing for? The song, "As The Deer" by Steffany Gretzinger, kept playing in my head as I read Psalm 130:5-6 over and over. May it bless you today.

The Good Shepherd, Easter Surprise!, Prayer Week
Dear Church,
We’re halfway through our journey through Lent, the 40 days between Ash Wednesday and Easter Sunday, when we draw near to God through remembering Jesus’ journey to the cross and resurrection. As part of our journey we have collected devotional reflections from various saints from Stillmeadow. Here is today’s Lenten Reflection from Joe Kidwell.
“ONLY GETTING STARTED”~ by Jeremy Camp
When we read Psalm 23:1-4, King David is saying “The Lord is his Shepherd.” The Psalm speaks to me as God is our guide in life. I believe King David wrote this as a reflection of his time shepherding in his youth. King David is saying God is the greatest shepherd because he can make all things right. The main words of this scripture are: leading, guiding, refreshes, and comforting. They are all reminders of what God does daily in our lives!
We received our greatest Shepherd in Jesus. In John 10:11, Jesus uses a parable to talk to his followers. “I AM the good shepherd. The good shepherd lays down his life for the sheep.” This is another reminder that when we surrender to Jesus Christ, he will never leave us even when we stray. He is always there!
I surrendered 18 months ago to Jesus, and he radically transformed my life. When I am reminded of this Psalm, Jeremy Camp’s song “Only Getting Started” comes to my mind:
To anyone who trusts in Jesus’ name
Watch your world become forever changed Here’s a song about light from darkness
I believe you’re only getting started

Dear Church,
We’ve begun our journey through Lent, the 40 days between Ash Wednesday and Easter Sunday, when we draw near to God through remembering Jesus’ journey to the cross and resurrection. As part of our journey we have collected devotional reflections from various saints from Stillmeadow. Here is today’s Lenten Reflection from Holly Yinger.
Psalm 95:4-7
“KING OF MY HEART”~ by John Mark + Sarah Mc Millan
In all honesty, I have at times felt a little confused by a God who commands our worship; by a God who says, “You must worship me and only me. Tell me again of my greatness.” Not because God is undeserving, but because it just doesn’t align with who I’ve come to understand God to be. I can’t imagine God’s self-worth is in need of our affirmation. But what I can imagine is a God who commands our worship because it is for our own good.
It’s as if each moment we spend worshiping God is a moment that we are guaranteed to remember. It’s an antidote of sorts to our forgetfulness. It has been said that we are always worshiping something. If there are moments when we are not worshiping God, what are we worshiping instead? What steals our hearts and our attention in those moments?
In a sense, it feels as though each time we choose to worship God, we are embracing an opportunity to remake the choice made at the Fall. Where we once chose to put our trust in ourselves, we now declare instead to affirm God’s worthiness. We choose to remember that God holds the depths and the heights of earth in hand. The Psalms remind us that a God of that grandeur is not only worthy of our worship, but also capable of holding us in our delight and our despair, in our celebration and our desperation.
May we remember our need for God no matter our circumstance and may we choose each day, each moment to put our trust in God rather than ourselves. May we affirm God as king of our hearts and recognize the importance of declaring that often. May we meditate on the goodness of God so deeply and so consistently that it becomes impossible for us to forget.
Remember God’s goodness and listen to “King of My Heart”: here.

We desire that this would be mutually beneficial for him and for Stillmeadow. So, to prepare for reflection prior to and during a Sabbatical, we invite you to share your thoughts. You can find out more and stay up to date at www.stillnaz.com/sabbatical.

Our Help, Emotionally Healthy Relationships, Strengths 101, more
Dear Church,
We’ve begun our journey through Lent, the 40 days between Ash Wednesday and Easter Sunday, when we draw near to God through remembering Jesus’ journey to the cross and resurrection. As part of our journey we have collected devotional reflections from various saints from Stillmeadow. Here is today’s Lenten Reflection from Lea Ann Shaffer.
Psalm 121 has long been one of my favorite psalms. Since I grew up surrounded by hills in my home state of West Virginia, the opening line always got my attention. On the first trip I took to Jamaica for a Work and Witness trip, the Lord gave me this Psalm for reassurance of His protection and care. I continue to find great meaning in its words.
As one of the songs of ascent, I can easily envision the children of Israel singing this song as they drew near to Jerusalem to prepare their hearts for one of the annual festivals. I can imagine them looking to the mountains surrounding the city. Each likely had very different thoughts going through his or her mind. The writer of this psalm perhaps even thought of the mountain of circumstances he was experiencing in his life but suddenly recalled that his help comes from the Lord.
As we prepare our hearts in this Lenten season, let us make sure that we recall that our help comes from the Lord. He is Lord Jehovah. He is our protector. He gave His only son, Jesus, to purchase our redemption. He does not slumber or sleep, and He will fulfill every purpose He has for our lives.
Are you looking at your circumstances today or are you focusing your mind on God’s power and protection over you and your family? Turn your eyes to the God who is in control and who can handle any concern you have today.

For His Kingdom,
Pastor Josh and the Stillmeadow Team
This is our King, Carlos is Coming, Ash Wednesday is too
Dear Church,
As we come to the end of our readings in Matthew, today’s reading in Matthew 27:32-66 brings us to our crucified and buried King.
THIS IS OUR KING
who loved us to death
who showed that we are worth dying for
who exposed the destructive powers of religion and human government
who prayed the Psalms in his torture
whose death was grieved by creation itself
THIS IS THE WAY OF THE KINGDOM FOR BELIEVERS
First, we receive his love and then live to show his love, even if it means we have to suffer or die as we do. Second, it means that we recognize his authority as greater than religion and any human government. Third, it means we look to the Psalms for guidance and inspiration in our own faith journey with Jesus (which is what we’re doing in our Lenten series! subscribe to the devotionals and plan to bring a friend to worship on Sundays).
Let us pray…
Father, your eternal plan to lovingly redeem the world and overcome the sin and pain of the world was on display in the sacrificial death of your son.
Jesus, love is what brought you to and kept you on that cross. Forgive us for the times we have refused your love for ourselves or refused to share your love with others. Help us be ready to die for love like you.
Spirit, keep before us this moment in time that changed every moment. And help us keep our attention on the dusk of history when the King of kings will return to redeem all things and judge the living and the dead.
KEEP FOLLOWING THE DAILY SCRIPTURE READINGS

A Pure Heart, Ukraine Update, IF (women’s conference)
Dear Church,
We’ve begun our journey through Lent, the 40 days between Ash Wednesday and Easter Sunday, when we draw near to God through remembering Jesus’ journey to the cross and resurrection. As part of our journey we have collected devotional reflections from various saints from Stillmeadow. Here is today’s Lenten Reflection from Pastor Steve Grosvenor.
Verse 1 of this Psalm in the Hebrew Bible identifies it as a prayer of penitence. It’s a prayer of King David when the prophet Nathan confronted him about his affair with Bathsheba. The story of this incident is recorded in 2 Samuel 11-12.
The key petition of David’s prayer for today’s devotional is found in verse 10: “Create in me a pure heart, O God! Renew a resolute spirit within me!” (NET). David confesses his sin and his sinfulness in verses 1-6. He asks God to wash away the guilt of his sin and restore the joy of “being forgiven” (vv. 6-7). But he recognizes a deeper need in verse 10, a need for transformation of his heart and spirit.
The heart and spirit in Old Testament literature are the seat of a person’s values and morals. He confesses a need for a work of God that went beyond simple resolutions to do better. In verse 12 He asks God to grant him a willing spirit that would sustain him as he proceeded to carry out his responsibilities as a king.
Two other descriptions of this work of God are found in Ezekiel 36:26-27 and Proverbs 3:5-6. Romans 12:1-2 provides a prescription for this work of God in our lives today.
A prayer for this transformation is expressed in a 19th century hymn.
Spirit of God, descend upon my heart;
Wean it from earth; through all its pulses move. Stoop to my weakness, mighty as Thou art,
And make me love Thee as I ought to love.
—George Croly (Spirit of God, Descend Upon My Heart)
I invite you to pray this prayer from your heart in this Lenten Season.

Ukraine Update (140 tons of food given, and more)
Please prayerfully review Nazarene Missions update on what’s going on in Ukraine. We are struck by the way the church is ministering there, from using their buildings as bomb shelters to helping distribute much food to those in need.
Pray that God would continue to strengthen our Ukrainian church leadership. They are carrying the weight of not only their own trauma but the care of entire communities of people.
Pray that the trauma training seminars help Ukrainian counsellors provide hope and healing for many who are in our churches or come through our churches for assistance.
Pray for our missionaries and leaders in Belarus, Russia, Moldova, Kirgizstan, Latvia, Kazakhstan, and Armenia who are feeling the strong, negative effects of this war.
