Reflection Questions

1. Begin with a brief time of meditation on Psalm 68:19-20.

2. Notice how the themes of promise and inheritance come out in Joshua 1:1-6. What does this teach us about God’s relationship and purpose for his people in Joshua’s time? What does it teach us about how God relates to people in general?

3. Read Genesis 15:13-16, Deut 18:9-12 and 19:17-18. What were God’s purposes in destroying and driving out the inhabitants of the promised land?

4. As a believer in Jesus (same Hebrew name as Joshua!) who gave his life instead of taking life, how do you deal with the violence evident in OT passages like Joshua 8:24-27?

5. Look at the New Testament perspective of battle In 2 Corinthians 10:3-5. What are the strongholds that need to be demolished in today’s world?

6. Is there a habit or thought pattern that is holding you back in your journey of faith with Jesus? What is it?

7. With Jesus as the new Joshua leading the church in victory over sin and death, what can we learn from Joshua 1:7-9 and Ephesians 6:10-18?

8. Close in a time of intentional prayer. Surrender the strongholds in your own life and pray against the strongholds in our world.
