WATCH THE SERMON HERE

Preaching Texts: Deuteronomy 6:4-12, 10:14-22, 18:15-19, Matthew 4:1-11

Call to Worship: Psalm 66:1-7, 16-20

Reflection Questions:

  1. Begin with quiet reflection on Psalm 66:1-7, 16-20. Choose a phrase, word or verse to meditate on.

  2. The Psalm invites the listener to praise God for his work in creation (67:5) and in his personal life (67:16). Take a moment to join in and praise God for his work.

  3. The Israelites wandered in the wilderness for 40 years because of their rebellion. What is a wilderness experience you have been through?

  4. Read Deuteronomy 6:4-12. Verses 4-5 became and remains the “Shema,” a daily prayer for the Jewish people. Why would this be a helpful daily reminder? Why would this be a good “charge” for a people moving into a new land?

  5. As you read Deuteronomy 10:14-22 what do you notice about the posture of God’s heart? What commands do you see there?

  6. In Matthew 4:1-11, Jesus was tested in his own wilderness experience. What can we learn from his resistance to the devil?

  7. Close in prayer. Ask God for strength to endure temptation, for help in remembering scripture, and for endurance to love him with everything you are.
