Reflection Questions

***These questions do not dive into the practice of “telling stories” but explore the story of God’s adoption of us into his family. We will explore the “telling stories” practice more in our Advent Series “This is My Story” that begins on November 20.

  1. Begin with silence.

  2. What did God say to you through the message?

  3. Read John 1:9-13. How does the story of being adopted into God’s family cause you to look at yourself and the world?

  4. Read James 1:27. How should our understanding of God affect the way we treat orphans (biological and/or spiritual?

  5. Jesus told the parable of the prodigal son (Luke 15) to show that God gives second chances. Why is that an important message for the church and for our world? How does that fit with the theme and practice of adoption?

  6. Jesus told the story of the ten minas (Luke 19) to show that God invests in people to invest in others. How does that story invite us to consider our role in caring for those who need second chances?

  7. How can your particular gifts help in welcoming the orphan?

  8. What is one way you want to live differently after this discussion?

Daily Prayer Guide

As we go through this season together, let’s unite in our scripture study and our prayer times. Let’s be like Daniel and set aside three times a day to pray with the following focuses.

Morning Prayer Focus—Pray for the Day

And pray for revival in Stillmeadow, for healing in York

Mid-Day Prayer Focus—Pray for the Lost (set alarm for 10:02?)

Pray for opportunities to share the gospel

Evening Prayer Focus—Say Thanks for the Day

Helpful Instructions for reading

  1. Start with silence. Relax in God’s presence. Imagine resting with Jesus.

  2. Thank God for something that happened in the last 24 hours.

  3. Read the verses slowly. Ask: How do I see God’s gifts?

  4. Finish in prayer for yourself, your family, your neighbors, your co-workers, your church. Pray through the nations at www.prayercast.com/nations.html.
