Scripture: 2 Kings 20-22, Psalm 107
The reading opens with King Hezekiah receiving bad news of a terminal illness. If that was my story, I would immediately seek a 2nd opinion and look for a way out. Yet Hezekiah turns to prayer assured that God will care for His faithful servant. God responds with healing and protection. The Psalm echoes the lesson, calling for praise to a God who hears and answers prayer. Both readings establish prayer with confidence as a necessary part of God’s divine plan.
This reminds me of an experience with my infant son. While on a springtime hike, clouds moved in grumbling and covering the warmth of the sun. When the rain started, my son began to fuss. To comfort him, I took him out of the carrier and held him to my chest. My body provided familiar warmth and protection while my soft words of encouragement eased his mind. I treasure that memory because it was a rare time I could provide everything he needed in this world. All he had to do was let me know when he was uncomfortable.
In the same way, the readings remind us that God is always near waiting for us to let Him know when we need comfort and care. To pull away only denies our opportunity for His comfort, protection, and reassurances.
Heavenly Father, remind us that you are ever present, we only need to cry out.
