Scripture: 2 Kings 23-25, Psalm 108

Today’s reading continues the religious, spiritual, and moral reforms initiated by King Josiah. This story holds keys for our own spiritual renewal.

Chapter 22 reveals the discovery of the ancient text. Tragically, the Word of God was lost in the House of God. Failure to proclaim God’s Word by the priest resulted in lapses of morality by the people. The Protestant Reformation resulted from the rediscovery of the Bible. Spiritual renewal starts with the rediscovery of the principles of God’s Word.

Josiah gathered the people to prioritize hearing God’s Word. Our days are loaded with responsibilities. I used to easily allow responsibilities to interfere with time devoted to soul care. If I say “yes” to too many opportunities, I may live beyond limits, neglecting self care and soul care. Neglect leads to drift from God, but reprioritizing hearing God’s Word leads to renewal of the heart.

Judah had participated in immoral practices of the culture. While eliminating these practices, Josiah reinstituted the Passover celebration. Removing unhealthy behavior makes room for practices that reinforce our relationship with God.

Successors to King Josiah brought spiritual and moral decline, culminating in exile to Babylon. But for a period, a nation experienced revival!

Father,

Grant me grace to daily reprioritize your Word. Draw me to Jesus, the Word made Flesh. Write your Word on my heart by the indwelling Holy Spirit.
