Series: God For Us Part 1: The Homemaking Good News
Sermon Text: Romans 1:1-7, 16:1-5, 3:21-25
Josh Kleinfeld
Romans 1:1-7
Paul, a servant of Christ Jesus, called to be an apostle and set apart for the gospel of God— 2 the gospel he promised beforehand through his prophets in the Holy Scriptures 3 regarding his Son, who as to his earthly life[a] was a descendant of David, 4 and who through the Spirit of holiness was appointed the Son of God in power[b] by his resurrection from the dead: Jesus Christ our Lord. 5 Through him we received grace and apostleship to call all the Gentiles to the obedience that comes from[c] faith for his name’s sake. 6 And you also are among those Gentiles who are called to belong to Jesus Christ.
7 To all in Rome who are loved by God and called to be his holy people:
Grace and peace to you from God our Father and from the Lord Jesus Christ.
Romans 16:1-5
I commend to you our sister Phoebe, a deacon[a][b] of the church in Cenchreae. 2 I ask you to receive her in the Lord in a way worthy of his people and to give her any help she may need from you, for she has been the benefactor of many people, including me.
3 Greet Priscilla[c] and Aquila, my co-workers in Christ Jesus. 4 They risked their lives for me. Not only I but all the churches of the Gentiles are grateful to them.
5 Greet also the church that meets at their house.
The Ripple Effects of a Gospel of Homemaking
The Ripple Effects of a Gospel of Power (Romans 1:17, 16:20)
For I am not ashamed of the gospel, because it is the power of God that brings salvation to everyone who believes: first to the Jew, then to the Gentile.
Romans 1:17
The God of peace will soon crush Satan under your feet.
The grace of our Lord Jesus be with you.
Romans 16:20
Sin is a homewrecking power (Romans 3:9)
Sin is a homewrecking action (Romans 1:21-32, 2:1-4)
We’re all homewreckers (Romans 3:23)
Christians are all homewreckers who have been made into homemakers by God’s grace (Romans 3:23-24)
Memory Verse:
But God demonstrates his own love for us in this: While we were still sinners, Christ died for us. Romans 5:8
Message Reflection Questions
Read Romans 5:8. Take two minutes to silently repeat this verse in prayer.
Give a one to two sentence explanation of the gospel.
Read Romans 1:1-7. What can we learn about God from just this introduction? What can we learn about humanity?
Read Romans 1:21-32. How does this help us understand that sin is both 1) an act we commit and 2) a power at work in the world?
Read Romans 2:1-4. Why are these instructions important for believers today?
Reflect on Romans 3:21-24. What has God done for us? What is the role of belief in the life of a Christian.
After these reflections, give a one to two sentence explanation of the gospel.
What is God calling you to be or do based off this conversation?
Who do you need to share this with? Close in prayer for faith to receive the message and for grace to share the gospel with others.
