Scripture: 1 Samuel 4-8, Psalm 79
GodStory
In 1 Samuel 8, the people of Israel reject God as king and ask for a human king. God allows such a foolish request because he allows for human free will. Rather than preventing His people from making mistakes, He gives them salvation after they are stuck. God gives His people up to their mistakes, but He offers them salvation when they turn back to Him.
OurStory
What kings are you serving instead of God? What is the object of your worship that takes precedence over God, the rightful king? Thanks be to God that He provided a savior despite our own selfishness. Jesus restores that broken relationship with God, and we can once again call Him “Lord”.
Prayer: Father, forgive us of our idolatry and our worship of anything that is not you! Fortify our hearts and minds with your Spirit, allowing us to see through the lies of the adversary and our own flesh. Rather, make us more like Jesus so that we can live as heirs to the throne with Him.
