God's Big Idea
God's Big Idea Session #19 - Love One Another Sunday February 6th John 13:34-35 Introduction
God’s Big Idea:Love God . . . love others.
So far, a theology of love.Today, more practical matters.
Why is it so important that believers love one another.Jesus said:“A new command I give you now: love one another. As I have loved you, so you must love one another.By this all men will know you are my disciples, if you love one another.” So, what does love one another look like . . .or what is it supposed to look like among your church friends? How will on-lookers know that we really do love each other?
Well, let’s look at the one another’s of the NT.There are 22 of them!
I.Encourage One Another
1.I Thessalonians 5:1-11 (READ)
2.The primary N.T. word for encouragement is parakaleo . . . to come alongside. In Greek literature this word was used to describe military situations. If a fellows solider saw that you were battling a strong enemy, they would come alongside to help you fight. . . and it would strengthen you.
3.Folks, in case you haven’t noticed, we are in the middle of a battle . . .for our marriages, children, families . . . for our souls and the soul of our nation.Look around you.You won’t have to look long to see some wounded soldier in need of encouragement.
4.We live in a world that desperately needs a church that is a source of encouragement.
II.Encouragement Can Take Several Forms
1.Gary DeLashmutt refers to this as the many faces of encouragement.
2.First, there is the encouragement that comes from affirming someone’s spiritual potential.
3.John 1:35-42.(READ)This encouragement came directly from Jesus. But sometimes God wants to use us.
4.II Corinthians 7:5-6 (READ)
5.Second, encouragement can come from recognizing spiritual accomplishments.
6.Paul was a master at this.I Thessalonians 1:2-8.(READ)
7.Another face: communicating God’s faithfulness.(I Thess. 5:12-24 – READ)
8.And finally, the fourth face of encouragement:challenging at crunch time. (Hebrews 12:1-13)
Conclusion
1.Encouragement Ministry Team
2.Prayer to be encouraged
